Beautiful cups. I know and can tell the feeling when we win at an auction. It's very strong. I imagine that this how people feel when they get high, but naturally (and fortunately for us) it lasts probably much longer.
Congratulations: now you only have to design a routine living up to your cups

Gaddy:
You are absolutely right about the depressed cup market right now. You won't see any of the sterling silver cups dropping in price anytime soon. The material is going up in price, which will probably cause them to remain stable. But the prices on other cups will probably start going down. Also, there will be more people selling off their collections to pay debts or to supplement their incomes. I've often said not to collect cups (or anything else) as an investment. If you can't eat it, put it in your gas tank or live in it, it's not going to be a really stable investment. On a different part of the forum, someone asked about what books to invest in. I told them "When you find a book that comes in a solid gold box, buy it, throw away the book and keep the box." I don't mean that people should throw books away, but in this case, the box would keep its value longer than the book. There are exceptions. But they are few and far between. Most "investment grade" books are expensive to start with. I don't see the Taschen Magic book as one of those that will be increasing in value soon, though. If there were a limited edition of 200, maybe so. However, you do have a very nice set of cups there. Congratulations.

Congrats Gaddy,
Are you planning to use them or are they just for Sundays and holidays?

It's funny that when it comes to art, people forget that if they had not bought something (any art piece, cups, books or whatever) the money could have earned them compound interests which over time would represent more than the capital gain (that how insurance companies "survive"). Why is it that collectors (and I'm one of them as you know) have a hard time understanding that this "interest on the money" cost is the price they pay for the access to something they are passionate about. And that price has to be paid for as long as we own something and it comes off the selling price, even when the selling price is higher than the buying price... and this is without talking about inflation. This would have come as bad news for you and me and a few others if we had not realized this a long time ago: temporary detention of anything we love has a cost. Thus, don't sell when you have a profit, sell when/if the passion fades away irrespective of the potential profit or loss in comparison to the purchase price. Someone else will love it and pay for the detention. Then you will be able to say the real cost of passion: Selling price minus (purchase cost + interest on the money over the detention period + inflation over the detention period)

Sorry for the mistyping, it should read:

Someone else will love it and pay for the detention. Then you will be able to say the real cost of your passion for something: Selling price minus (purchase cost + compound interests on the purchase price over the detention period + inflation over the detention period). The chances that we are going to be in profit on an average basis is more than slim... but we live a more exciting life.

Nice cups. As mentioned above, I don't believe I've ever seen a set of Phoenix cups with the lip turned so nicely.
Would you be interested in trading them for a one-eyed cat and a dented Zombie ball if I throw in another ironwood wand? |

I may have had a little problem with the cup purchasing. Hi my names Jeff and I'm addicted to cups. I have been fortunate enough to buy a few RNT2 cups again though. Your guess is as good as mine on why he kept moving the price. You got a great set of cups at a great price. Congrats. Jeff |
