My favorite is up to eight. I like all of 'em other than boys 9 - 12 because they tend to be very stupid and think they know everything...a bad combo.

9 - 12 year old boys may think they know it all but they aren't stupid. They can be brilliant and engaging.
I love to see that last bit of confidence and joy before years of teen angst. I love to see unbridled interest and open curiosity. It is so much more fun than the lay back "too cool ...", " what ever" attitude that can hit some kids later when they are afraid to show any feelings in public for fear of the ridicule of their peers. They are a handful though! - Mary Mowder |

Usually mothers and aunts think they are brilliant and engaging...they are mud puddles, little girls are smart on the other hand.

Magic Santa we may disagree about boys but we agree about girls.
I guess I have a Lake Woebegone attitude about kids, They are all above average. - Mary Mowder |

Lil' girls are smarter than around age 14, then the girls get dumber for two years and it equals out about age 27

My favorite is family shows. After that 4-8 year olds.
I used to be VERY afraid of tweens, but I have recently had some great experiences with them teaching magic classes and I'm scared and excited about working more with them doing magic shows. Even more so now that I've read Terry Parrett's e-books on magic for tweens and bizarre library programs (yay!).

You do not have to be afriad of tweens. The reason people have a hard time with it is because kids are not dumb. they can sense and smell fear on you. You have to develop a different show to fit different age groups and be confident in your approach and confident in your show itself.
kids ate the older age do not like to be talked down to or listen to patter that is childish or foolish. You have to customize your routines a bit and change the way you go about them. Show them respect and they will often times show it back. they still want to be entertained. Kyle

I find that doing supposed dangerous stuff for boys ages 9 on up is really fun and at the same time I get a lot of respect. I keep telling them that this is very dangerous and DO NOT attempt to do anything you see me do at home. Actually everything I do is 100% safe unless you lose your mind and do something super stupid.
I do the bobcat trap, and smash and stab, and I catch a dart shot from a gun in between my teeth. I include them with Daggers through head, (watch your angles), the hand chopper, and the visible sawing through body. I present these tricks as being only the first or second time I have performed them. Many times I have my volunteer chicken out after my presentation. There is always someone willing to step up if that happens. I like performing for every group. I bought magic that entertains whatever group I'm performing for. With adults it is the floating table, multiplying bottles, and bra from silks, and the teleportation ring. For the little ones, it is stuff like the coloring book routine, Fraidy cat rabbits, Axtell art pad, and run rabbit run. Then of course there are tricks that entertain all age groups, linking rings, linking ropes, needle through balloon, and my 3 trick real rabbit production also using the rabbit wringer, and my Axtell Hands Free puppet. |

I'm doing a party for my favorite audience tonight. I'm doing a 90 year old woman's birthday party, at a senior citizen's assisted living center, and her whole family from 2 to 90 years old will be there.

Aww great gig, Al. Family shows and a wide age range is always fun. When the folks all know each other, you can really improv off of situations. have a great show.

The best part is when Al shows up and the birthday girl says "I remember you! You were a junior when I was a freshman!"

No there's no chance of that happening, but I did bump into an old girlfriend of mine at a senior citizen's apartment complex last month.

As you can see Santa and I are old friends. Actually Santa she told me that I look exactly the same as I did 16 years ago, over weight, and grey haired.

I usually prefer kids to be no younger than 5 or 6, and no older than 11-12. It seems to me that the very young, or very old kids can potentially be the most problematic. I try to make my shows appealing to all ages, including adults. Most of the time older kids, younger ones and adults seem to enjoy it. I do try to avoid electing the very young or very old kids as volunteers, but sometimes they can be the best volunteers and create some of the most memorable (good, not bad) moments on stage. You just never know what you are going to get and that's what makes each show fresh and exciting to me.

These days former kids bring their kids to my shows.
Will you still love me when I'm 64? (will be singing along with my trusty ukulele to my nearly normal wife in October on her birthday) Parties for 80 + are lots of fun ..especially with a huge family turn out. Papa Charlie...my father in law...turns 89 today....I just played him happy birthday over the phone on my new (to me) electric/acoustic guitar...... Harris
