There's Fantasma Magic between 33rd and 34th on 7th avenue...their selection isn't as big as Tannen's and they sell lots of "sets", but they have a much friendlier staff who is much better at performing magic overall. Plus there's a cute bunny. You can't miss it, because it's literally right above an adult store.
As for busking and close-up, ain't no place like Times Square! Given recent events, you could always try the area near Central Park and the Met. Lots of happy people walking around there or just sitting around.

It's Tannen's.
You may be thinking of Fantasma Magic on 7th Avenue. You may want to look into 'Monday Night Magic' too. There's more than magic!! Coney Island, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, New York Skyride, Madame Tussaud’s, Circle Line River Cruise, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Madison Square Garden Tour, NBC Studio Tours, New York Aquarium. |

Tannens is a little hard to find, and getting the staff off of their charis is a trick in it self.

Get a subway pass, walking in the big apple could wear you out. In spite of their reputation for being rude New York natives will bend over backward to help you. If you must observe three card monte, or the shell game go to Chuna Town, but I do not recommend it. Littl Italy is just around the corner and it is my favorite New York spot. If you go to Monday Night Magic tell Michael Chaut that you are a magician, and he will invite you to eat with the performers after the show.

After 911 when no one wanted to go to New York the natives all changed, and became very friendly to tourists, because they found out what it is like to have no tourist business. There is a diner on the corner of 51st and Broadway that has singing waiters which my wife still talks about. I think it is called the skyline diner.

Personally, I love New York, and find New Yorkers waaaaay more friendly that citizens of lots of European countries I've visited.......and lots of other American cities as well.
As an aside, I'm going to make new accommodation arrangements for my future stays in New York. I go to New York quite frequently on business, and when I do I always stay at the Marriot Marquis in Times Square. It's close to everything, and has the most advanced elevator system in the world, and is all around a great New York hotel. A few months back, there was that incident at the Marquis where there was a bunch of gunfire in the passenger breezeway at the Marquis. And further a bunch of bullet holes in the t-shirt shop located in the breezeway. This from a gunman being chased by a cop, guns blazing the whole time. I read the story, and thought, mmmmmmm, that's the t-shirt shop I always visit to get stuff to bring home to my daughter, and that's the breezeway I walk across probably 30 or 40 times when I go to and from the hotel each week I'm there. Oh well, a one time only affair, and nothing to worry about. Now, we have the "Times Square Bomber", who as I read the story, it starts to dawn on me that this guy parked his truck about 20 feet from the Starbucks at the Marquis, the place I sit for breakfast every single morning I'm in New York. I then sit there yet again for another coffee in the afternoon. So.......tons of gunfire in the t-shirt shop I've been in a dozen or so times, and more gunfire in the breezeway I've crossed hundreds of times. Now, the bomber parks his truck outside the Starbucks I've sat at hundreds of times (and on my last trip to NY I walked across 45th one evening to see "Next to Normal" at the Booth Theater, which would be about 50 feet in the other direction from where he parked his truck)................needless to say, I've woken up somewhat regarding this location as my New York "home away from home". I believe there is a message somewhere in all of this, and will be staying elsewhere in NY on my next trip. |

I'd like to spend more time in NYC, but every time I go I get a terrible lung infection. Four visits, four serious infections. I've finally learned my lesson.
An interesting aside (maybe not): The last trip I left out on a Greyhound headed for Boston. About 2 hours outside NYC I literally felt my chest open up to deeper breathing. It was an amazing sensation. Like in one breath my oxygen intake grew by a factor of 10. The nasty yellow stuff took a few days longer. I'd go back tomorrow if I knew how to beat this. I'm open to suggestions... |

I always wanted to go to Café Rustico, but Saturday in New York is too hectic for me.
Kevin Do not expect to get a warm welcome in Boston, I'll leave it at that.

Silver, it sounds to me like you're charmed! You should take that luck with you to the roulette table.
Regarding the friendliness of New York and other American cities in comparison to Europe, there seems to be huge regional variances. If you take one single measure--open up a city map and start staring at it, and see if someone stops unsolicited to ask if you need help finding something--I've heard New York ranks pretty high in friendliness. But having not been there as an adult, I'm curious how they'd do with my test. In most northern German cities, in comparison, you'll probably fall asleep before anyone offers help. Hamburg is not only my favorite city in Germany, but one of my favorites overall. But the people are reserved. My experience in Holland, in comparison, is that someone will offer help as soon as they notice the map. They act like they are happy that you are visiting their country. Sometimes they stop me for no other reason than they hear me speaking American English. That's enough to say "Hi" and ask me if I am finding everything OK. Cool country. As far as what do do in New York: are you planning a bicycle tour, Kevin? |

I'm so glad that you spoke about the different cities in Europe, because it is the same here. When I used go camping in Maine we had a firm rule that after we passed through New York don't stop again until you get to the Maine border or you will be sorry, because in Maine everybody is friendly.

When I lived in NYC, Tannen's was on Times Square. At that time, they used to advertise a local diner that would hold a "magic brunch" on Saturdays. I went once, it was a blast. Is anything like that still going on?
