Based on the overwhelmingly glowing reviews of his products by members whom I hold in high regard, I am thinking of taking my very first foray into the world of Paul Brook.
Assuming I will enjoy his work as much as I hope to, the plan is to acquire all of his books. However, even the journey of thousand miles begins with a single step, so I'd like to ask the members here for their recommendation as to what my first step should be. As to criteria, I'd like something that provides a healthy mix between theory, subtleties, effects, methods and presentational angles. The greater the number of elements the easier it will be to determine if his other books will be right for me. Based on what I've seen from his website it seems that either The Alchemical Tools or On Mephisto's Shoulder would fit the bill, but perhaps another book would be better in this regard. Your thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

You're on a slippery slope there young man!
After buying locked in thought from him, it all spiraled out of control. I'd really recommend Chrysalis of a Polymath. Its weighty, it's jam packed with effects, subtleties and thinking, and to my surprise, is a very enjoyable read. I'm getting a lot from this ere book. And if you want to break yourself in gently before the urge to buy all his work takes you, I'd plump for Juxtapose. Its beautiful, and it just reeks of Pauls thinking and cunning. Highly recommended!

I think your initial hunch is correct. Alchemical Tools will give your a broader overview of his thinking and some nice effects. On Mephistos Shoulder has better effects but can wait.
Then check out Locked in Thought, One in The Hand and his latest Juxtapose. Anthony

It sounds like you'll buy more than one of Paul's books before deciding whether you like his work. Buy whatever grabs your interest first. I bought The Gift, On Mephisto's Shoulder and The Alchemical Tools (in that order) and they're all good, so I say it doesn't matter which one you buy first. When I first read The Gift, it filled a need no other book I owned could fill. I was so pleased I bought more. I think you'll have a similar experience.

Alchemical Tools is marvelous, and changed my paradigm almost as much as Derren's Absolute Magic did. I think the two books you mentioned are the best to start--one more philosophical, and the other more effect-oriented. Be forewarned, it is very easy to get addicted to Paul's growing body of work...

Thanks everyone. My order is in and I am eagerly anticipating its arrival. I both hope and fear that this will be the first of many.

Alchemical Tools is in my top five pieces of work put out. There is not a week that gies by where I don't read atleast a chapter of that book.

All, I bought The Alchemist Tools at MINDS3. Wow, what an amazing book. I'm relatively new to magic and mentalism, I'm so glad I read this. I got so much more out of it than any other that book I've read.
I'm now looking at buying another Book by Paul, the question is, which one?!?!? Which one would you say has the best effects? |

Chrysalis is a great (weighty) book, lots to ponder in there.
