Johnny Ace Palmer has been added to do a "hard core" lecture for the Society of American Magicians convention June 30 - July 4 at the Atlanta Hilton.
When Johnny Ace Palmer earned the title of World Champion Magician in 1988, he was the first close-up magician in history to receive that award, called the Grand Prix. Johnny received the award at the FISM convention, where competing magicians from 47 countries witnessed his award winning act. The Grand Prix is awarded once every three years. In addition, Johnny was voted Best Close-Up Magician at the Magic Castle in Hollywood two years in a row (1987, 1988) and Lecturer of the Year (1996, 1999). He is also the only magician to receive both the International Brotherhood of Magicians' Gold Cups Award of Excellence (1983) and the Society of American Magicians' (SAM) Gold Medal Award of Honor (1986). He will be doing a late night “hard core” lecture at the S A M Convention. In addition, MUM Editor Michael Close and Earl South will be staying up late for their "hard core" lectures. Michael Close is an internationally known performer, creator, author, and lecturer, and he is the current editor of M-U-M, the magazine of The Society of American Magicians. His five-volume Workers series has been hailed as a modern classic. His most recent project is the two-DVD set Michael Close: Devious, produced by L&L Publications. This brings the total to FIFTEEN lectures and sessions at the event! Register now! http://www.magicsam.com |

I first saw Johnny perform at the SAM convention in 1986 in KY. He blew me away! Then I saw him at the Magic Castle with Mitch Williams, another gold medal winner and a fantastic stage manipulator. In 1989 or 90, I produced a show that ran eight weeks with Johnny, Mitch, and T.C. Tahoe at the Backstage Theater in Irvine, CA. I must admit that Johnny Ace Palmer is one of the best performers and actors that I have seen. This man got his degree in theater and uses it in his magic presentations. Every word is scripted, rehearsed, and delivered with the exact tone and timing that he wants for maximum effect. Every move is blocked and framed to acheive the maximum effect. Every routine is constructed to build suspense up to the climax. And just when the audience thinks they have it or it is over, he hits them with a totally unexpected "WOW!" kicker.
It doesn't matter if you like his show or material. Study the construction of each component of his show and routines. Study his stage movement, blocking, and body language. It is the same every show that he does. This is a performer that every magician should analyze and learn from. We should all try to reach the level of presentation that he gives each and every audience. |
