Arrgh, this is not a good start for the 2010 season! The last show I got washed out, now on this show I got blown away!
The forecast was for 25-35 mph winds today, but all was calm at 8 a.m., so I packed up and headed out. It was a little breezy as I set up, but no big deal. As usual, I staked all four legs of the tent and also ran guy lines at each corner. Of course, about 5 minutes after I was all set up, the wind really started to pick up. The tent was doing OK, although it was shimmying pretty good! But there was no way I could demo the worms in that wind. I stuck it out for about ten minutes to see if things might improve, but they didn't, so I packed everything up and went home. I could have pulled the tent cover, which would have solved the tent problem, but then I still had the wind and the sun to contend with, so I decided to bag it. Turned out to be the right choice, as it was steadily getting worse and I could see other vendors with overturned tables, and I didn't want to lose the tent -- even stakes can only take you so far! The wind blew steady and hard all day, so I felt I did the right thing, even though I walked away from plenty of kids and plenty of money. The lady next to me had an E-Z Up and she had hung cement-filled PVC tubes from each leg. But that's no substitute for staking the tent, and the darn thing started walking everywhere. So as I left, I gave her four tent stakes and staked the legs down for her. Told her I'd see her next year and to remember that she owed me four stakes! So the motto of this story is -- stake those tents, darn it! I have liability insurance but four tent stakes only cost about $3.50 at any sporting goods store. It's cheap protection. And so on to the next show, let's hope for better weather!! SETH

Well that sux Seth, sorry you are having such bad luck. But it did get me thinking as pitchman thinks.Since you're already had the space paid for maybe you should keep kites handy to sell for such a day. You might not make as much,but...
I bet they are cheap wholesale.Keep a gross in the car with kite string and you'll be ready to save some of the day.I wouldn't try to fly one, just put them on the table. You could bally "GOOD DAY TO FLY A KITE !...and we have the Ben Franklin special here today...you get a KEY with every kite...a key kite...just kidding folks...just kidding...pick'em out...pick'em out..." If you can't bet'em...join'em ... Later,Don |

Hey Don, not a bad idea!! And pinwheels or wind socks would also have sold well today! Too bad I didn't have the windmill concession, I probably would have cleaned up.
The fellow who usually has the spot next to me, the funnel cake concession, didn't even show up. He is a seasoned old-timer and probably knew it wasn't worth taking the chance. Plus, once he gets that vat of oil heated up, he can't just pack up and leave in a hurry; he needs to wait for the oil to cool back down before he can drain it. So he can't afford to get caught in a bad situation. But I think he works on a percentage deal, so it didn't cost him anything to no-show. Me, I saw $35 blowing away in the wind -- but at least it was for a good cause (the city's Summer Recreation Program) and it was tax-deductible. Like I said, I'll just move on to the next one. It's a Strawberry Festival, and if the weather will just cooperate, I should do very well --- lots of kids, consistently strong foot traffic and a real good party atmosphere. They also have a great live polka band that's a welcome change from the same-old DJ stuff. SETH

Windy? I tell you about WINDY!!
I had driven 1000 miles from San Antonio to Great Bend KS for the 3I Farm Show, Wed-Fri last week. I was gonna work with my friend, Lowell, from Omaha, who met me there. I had signed up late so could not get a space inside. Since we were outside, among hundreds of exhibitors, on concrete, we didn’t set up on the usual set-up day, Tuesday, but waited ‘til the morning of the show. Since we were pretty far from the entrance, we were not worried about taking too much time setting up, because all we really had to do was put up the 2 tables and the EZ Up. I did drive out and take a look at my space, 25’ front by 40’ deep, plenty of space for a couple of 4’ tables. I also noticed that all the tents there, dozens of them, were tethered to big concrete blocks, each about as big as my bath tub. Did they know something I didn’t? When we arrived the next morning, the wind was projected 15-25 mph on that flat Kansas prairie. Not a prob, I thot, tho I couldn't drive a stake into concrete, I’ll just extend the front legs on the EZ Up and leave the rear legs down and the wind will blow the rear legs into the concrete, kinda like a sail, helping to hold it down. And that’s exactly how it worked. The 1st day. The guy in the tent next to us allowed us to dolly our stuff into his tent at the end of the day, so we didn’t have to re-load the van. However, on the 2nd day, the wind had shifted 180 degrees and was now projected to 40 mph, so attempting to do the same thing as the day before was out of the question. I had driven my van into the space, thinking I’d tether at least the rear legs to it. Not possible. Even hooked to the van as tightly as I could, the front legs were dancing like Arthur Murray teaching the Cha-Cha. We took the EZ Up down and just sat there, working in the sun all day long. Lowell left about 2 because he had business in Omaha, but I stayed ‘til 5. Really wasn’t hot because the wind blew so strongly and when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t appear to have a sun burn. I again put my stuff into the tent of the guy next to me. But by the time I got back to the motel, my face and lower arms were as red as an embarrassed apple. I immediately showered to remove the show crud and slathered on Noxzema. Really had no pain but was just redder’n a Commies heart.. The NEXT morning, when I got to the show, several tents (and these are REAL tents, with REAL poles and REAL anchors) had their side curtains blown away, many displays inside also gone. The guy where I’d stored my stuff the evening before was sitting in a chair about 10 feet from his tent, holding onto my dolly. Everything that had been inside his tent, tables, displays, samples—all gone. His tent was empty. Wind at that point was probably about 30 mph. “When I got here this morning, everything was blown away. I found your stuff on the other side of the aisle. I put as much as I could find back in these boxes and hope it’s all there. I’m really sorry.” I thanked him, told him not to worry, it wasn’t his responsibility, didn’t even look to see what had been salvaged. Even tho there was one more day of the show, the wind was so strong I just loaded up my van and left. As had many others before I arrived. Many empty spaces. All in all, even tho I was only there for 2 days, I did relatively well. Probably netted $500 those 2 days, in spite of show cost, gas, motel and food. Very hard to do cards because they would blow away. But compared to the others, many of whom lost EVERYTHING, I was pretty lucky. Next year, if I can’t get inside, I think I’ll skip the 3I show. Well, I think the phrase is "...ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances...". And with no available show in my area on that Mother's Day weekend, the farm show seemed to be the best choice...and WOULD have been, had it not been for the wind. Plus I got to commune with my friend, who also paid half the $435 cost.
If I'd been inside, it would have been great. The farmers at the show were accustomed to the wind. Just the outside vendors WITH TENTS had the problem. No tent? No prob. Many implement dealers had no probs at all. No tractors or manure spreaders blew away. Only the tents and contents. I'll be doing the computer show in SA next Saturday and probably the flea market on Sunday. No driving and cheap. Jon |
