I have been asked to do a short program for a 40 year high school reunion. Any ideas using the period and or the audience without it seeming to be too set up?

What is it that you do? Haven’t you read a book or seen one of the many DVDs or E-books that you can buy that will show you what and how to do something?
What is it that you LIKE to do and WHAT do the people expect from you at this get together? What have you done in the past as far as entertainment? If you have to ask us what to do then I get the strong feeling that you have never (or limited) performing experience. If this is true, then maybe doing a few magic tricks would be better than trying to pull off a mentalism act. Magic at least will give the people something to look at other than you standing there trying to do a PW or NW. Because you are asking us what to do then I would suggest that you do what you are familiar with. You don’t need to produce and perform an hour show, just do (maybe only) three things at the most, and then enjoy the party. Look at what you are doing now and work on it. Why learn something new and then (maybe) fumble through it when you can do something that you are familiar with. Inject your personality into what you do NOW and you may be better off in the long run. Remember this, it isn’t what you do, but how you do it that is most important. No matter what you do you still need an opening, middle and closing to your act. What is your opening (lack of a better word) patter and how will you connect? Yea, I would just stick to what you are familiar with and build upon it. Simple and workable is your answer. Best Ray |

I believe he is looking for pieces that are reflective of the "high school reunion" theme, or perhaps the 40 year distance of time. Not just routine suggestions -- but suggestions that fall into HIS specific theme...
Here is a wild idea -- a prediction scrawled in a year book from over 40 years ago that pertains to events from the DAY OF the Reunion... ;) J

J has the idea. Plenty of performance experience but looking for that something different that would lend some nostalgia.

I'm thinking yearbook photos, predictions of what they would do in the future (now) etc. For example, can you find out if any have got married to each other? If so you could do something along the lines of "those most likely to..."
Naturally this would involve some p**-s*** but you could do some amazing things this way. |

Another vote for facebooking, but also consider OOTW as a mass group experiment to show how connected you still all are...doesnt have to be playing cards obviously...

Thinkng maybe a chair routine with a matching of spouses with a possible mistake with an old girlfriend-boyfriend.

I am thinking to open with a Bingo game (Mark Wilson) with the winner to yell the name of the mascot and have some sort of music prediction to follow. The yearbook idea sounds good.

Could you get the organiser to lend you a yearbook so you can "study their faces"...
when really its just one massive piece of pre-show...nicknames, "most likely to...", that kinda thing... I like the idea of using the yearbook photos, and maybe even something very simple like gemini twins to match up the high-school sweethearts?

Q&A
Where you get info on names of certain teachers classes....best friends etc thrown in with some coldreading.. This would have the most impact... |

This sounds like an excellent audience - everyone will be in the right frame of mind for having fun and for experiencing afresh the teenage feelings (and friendships) they had all those years ago
One thing I would say is this - because you are in the profession you are, YOU are wondering which effects you should choose, and how you should present, BUT those you are presenting to will be looking at anything and everything you do with fresh eyes - remember that it is unlikely they will know any of the things you present, so my own personal advice would be - go with things you are most familiar with - the things you have practiced and presented many times. Your confidence and the fact that you are so comfortable in your performance will mean that it will come across as a wonderfully polished performance, and any unfavourable angles/sightings will go right over their heads Most important of all - ENJOY and I am sure they will too.
