...that I could come up with, at least.
Elements from Sam the Bellhop, Darwin Ortiz's work, and Lennart Green are combined to make a really unique routine. Comments and Critiques are welcomed and encouraged! Thanks in advance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtRCq77-P7M Scott. |

Really, really clever.
It needs some work- some of the 'revelations' occur in the wrong order (in my opinion), and there are some things that detract more than they add (like the "invisible cards for the switch"). But on the whole, it's a very clever idea with a lot of potential. Ben

Haha Ben, that's exactly what Tyler Wilson said when I showed him.
How should the hands be revealed? The Bridge hand last, because it has the most cards in it and, therefore, seems "bigger"? Yeah, I don't like the "invisible cards" thing. I just wanted to do SOMETHING to make the change happen that didn't look like "magic" (i.e., snap of the fingers)- because it's supposed to be a display of card skill, not magic. Any suggestions on that front? Scott. |

A subtle point about the bridge hand: because the suits have rank (in the bidding: clubs (lowest), diamonds, hearts, spades (highest)), a hand of 13 spades is better than a hand of 13 hearts. If your audience doesn't play bridge, this won't mean much (but, then, neither will a hand of 13 hearts: they may appreciate that there's skill in dealing an entire suit to one hand, but they cannot appreciate fully the value of such a hand in a game they don't understand); if they do play bridge, they'll realize that they have a great hand, but it will probably be useless as an opponent will likely outbid them.
Of course, that runs afoul of your royal flush in spades ending (although poker players should be as satisfied with a royal flush in hearts: suits have no rank in poker). |

Thanks for that info. I clearly don't have a clue about Bridge. Haha.
I was just informed that this is kind of like Marlo's Spade Routine ( http://www.lybrary.com/marlos-spade-routine-p-17947.html ), only all in one step, as opposed to a routine of separate effects. Nifty. I'd never seen that before. Scott. |

Nice job, Scott.
Just two little things presentation-wise: 5 cards down is Draw, not Stud. Also, a little bit of nervousness in the patter. Slow it down just a touch, and be aware of the use of the word "now" as the first word in many of your sentences. And mechanically: Nice work, but what motivation do you have for placing your original bad hand on the talon, then almost immediately removing it, then using the laser deal? If you could come up with a motivational mechanism for going to the talon with the cards, then I think you have a much stronger routine - it is strong already - but for me, that was its Achilles Heel. Nice work with the Ace reveal, and I like the whole presentational scheme. I agree with S2000 that dealing the Grand Slam in the Bridge reveal with Spades would really be excellent. While many do not play Bridge, still the impossibility of dealing the suit order is impressive. The Spades are, of course, the eye catchers. Of course, one could argue that a Bridge player would consider the reveal too pat. Bridge players are usually quite savvy - sometimes even more so than the average Poker player. I think, however, that since we magicians have been playing at Royal Flush reveals for ages, the Bridge reveal in Spades would be a killer for Bridge players. Besides, they know you're are a magician. VERY nice routine. My criticisms are more constructive suggestions. Ahimsa, Vlad |

Wow... I say "now" 8 TIMES in 3 minutes. I didn't notice that before. Thanks.
Haha It's Draw? What am I even doing this routine for? I obviously don't ever play cards. Haha I think I could have motivation for the 5 card switch if I performed the switch, but instead of dealing the cards immediately onto the table, left them fanned face-down, outjogged on top of the deck and used my right hand to pick up and reveal the straight. This way, I'm setting the cards on the deck to free up my right hand- and when I want to "change" those cards, all I'd have to do is remove them from the top of the deck and fake some kind of a "switch" to please the laymen. Thanks for pointing that out, too. You guys are really helping me out a lot! (I'm mainly a coin guy and had to look up with a friend what you meant by the "talon". ) Is a royal flush in hearts strong enough for my hand, though? Because whenever we see royal flushes, in effects like "Zapped" and in the movies, it's always Spades. Why is that? Do spectators know this? If that's fine, I have no problem changing suits to please the Bridge players. Scott. |

I wonder - unless you did it so well that I missed it, why not use the Jinx Change at the point where you go to the talon? (Obviously this affects your setup, so maybe it is not possible.) It is a bold move, but works and when done confidently - and your work shows you are confident - it looks as though you are merely gesturing. The laser deal then becomes even more impossible in that you are, of course, doing something beautifully impossible. It happens long after the Jinx, such that the final poker reveal is inexplicable.
Better card guys like Ben would have a better approach, I am sure. Again, to me, the only red flag was going to the talon. I applaud your work. Excellent chops!! Ahimsa, Vlad Hi again Scott, Suits have no rank in Poker. So yes, a Royal Flush in any suit gets the pot. So, you are primarily a COIN guy? You could have fooled me! Nice work. Ahimsa, Vlad The Spades are used in movies because they are eye catchers. Look at the ornate design of the Ace of Spades. Plus, there is a neat history to the Ace of Spades itself you may not know: It is the only card of the Major Arcana to be represented in the modern pack of cards according to some sources. The card? Death. Other accounts hold that the Ace of Spades was sold separately in England and that was the revenue one paid to the crown. LEGEND has it that someone had counterfeited the Ace of Spades and was found out and put to death for it. Could both be mere legends, but cool presentational stories - much like the Curse of Scotland (9D) and the Devil's Bedposts (4S). A fact: When the forerunner to the Mafia in America, The Black Hand, whacked someone, the usual calling card they left with the corpse was ... The Ace of Spades. In the Castellammarese War, which saw the defeat of The Black Hand and the rise of the Mafia, the Mafia button men used the same calling card or "message" on their Black Hand enemies. Ahimsa, Vlad |

I purposely avoid the spades in a Royal Flush because so many do use it! I'm kinda partial to hearts, myself!

Thanks, Andrew, glad you liked it.
I'll change the royal flush to hearts and the bridge hand to the "grand slam". Makes no difference to me, then! Scott. |

On a sidenote:
(Perspicacity) This drove me right to 'Webster's'. My father always said, "When you don't know a word, always look it up. That's the way you learn." (It always amazed me, when listening to the late William F. Buckley, Jr., when he had is TV show. Had to do so, with a dictionary on my lap. LOL) Well said, S2000magician. |
