Especially if you actually perform - you will have people present who regardless of what you do, based on their character and current social situations, will just want to cause everyone grief and don't want to feel any loss of control.

Now, since everyone is discussing this level of challenge - take it up an ante...

"Tell us your name"

"Alex"

"Please come up on stage.... "

Comes up

"So I want you to let me read your mind"... do routine....

After its done...

"Thanks Alex"

"My name is not ALEX its TODD - you phoney! Hey everyone - he is a phoney!!!!*"

WOW, That is food for thought!

Also, while I don't bother with that (and I've explained why in a previous post) just because Bruce posted the above, let me add that having them writing their name and getting it thru a peek or imp device (as someone suggested in this thread) is far by being a warranty of them writing down their real name anyway...

It reminds me of a time (the one and only time it happened to me in twenty and more years) in which when asked to cut the deck, the participant just cut ONE CARD from top to bottom. Smile

Of course that action did not change a thing but who knows if that guy deliberately thought that this smart-ass action could have messed me up...
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!

There is an easy way around this, particularly for stage work. Bob 'tipped' it on one of his tele seminars a few years ago - I've used it ever since. Never fails..

I have had this happen to me once. I don't think I was being challenging and it worked out ok as I used a standard method to get it, and luckily they didn't play around with it at that point.
In close up settings I always aim to introduce myself and get everyone's name before I explain I'm a mind reader.
Occasionally at cabaret or some night clubs I perform, people make up names for themselves and if I think people are making up a name, usually tipped by a smirk from one of thier friends, I just say something along the lines of let's not worry about your real names, any names will do tonight - this will be a hit if any one is fakinking the name and comes across as quit playful. There's one place I perform regularly where I always use this line now on stage or close up as it fits with the general vibe of the night.

I understand 5 years ago but is it really still a problem now?
If you're genuinely getting challenged on this than instead of finding a clever comeback line, it would be better to re-structure your act so that it doesn't happen.
Reader discretion is advised.

There are at least six threads on a similar subject with all sorts of interesting ideas and solutions here on the Café.
The subject is also covered in Banachek's PS3.

I just get everyone's registration info and memorize it before the show starts. It works!

NICE! one
hahaha

My line for this situation (fits my persona)
Mentalist: Can you tell us your name please?
Participant: You are the mind-reader, you tell me!
Mentalist: Ok, look at me (direct stare and a moment of tension)... Nothing... Not that you don't have mind (pause for comic relief) rather that you are not focusing on that information and I am receiving a lot of different images and words that I prefer to keep private for your dignity as human being.

And I just move on...

Normally I don't need that kind of attitude on my participants (some routines requires for entertainment values a "challenging" participant, but that´s the exception), so I just move on and ask other member of the audience to participate, doing a funny come-back to the previous situation...

Other solution that I have use in the past is having a prediction about this :

"A person called "XXX" will not want to say his name"

or

"A person called XXX will be a pain in the a**"

Whatever suits you..

I think this is my favourite "counter" that I've come across. I hope you don't mind if I borrow it.

I used to use the line "mind reading is difficult and tiring and I've had a long day. Can you just give this one to me?" But I definitely prefer yours.

I say Alice. Then when they say that's not my name I respond with "you told me to tell you your name. I'm telling you your name is Alice."

And if it is Alice, awesome!
