I'm getting ready to lecture in Denver on my signature Gospel-Themed mentalism routines.
so... what's your favorite gospel-themed mentalism effect or routine? You don't need to post working, but a general description of what the audience sees might be helpful for those who might not be familiar with the effect... especially if it's original with you. I'm particularly fond of book tests myself. |

The Betrayer: PATEO F**** to arrive at one of the twelve disciples-Judas! It looks pretty cool with the disciples names written in caligraphy on bill-sized pieces of ancient-looking parchment.
Daniel and the Dream: "The Temperamental Guest" from Prism reworked with items made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, clay, and a rock. These items represent the different layers of the statue (different kingdoms) from the dream in the book of Daniel. The different materials can also represent the different conditions of a human heart that needs the Rock of Ages. (For those who don't know, one object is hidden and the others placed back in a box. The performer who has seen nothing reveals things about the person related to the object picked and a prediction is opened to also reveal the chosen item.) Artistic Vision: Basically, the ODDS/Director's Cut method reworked with prints of famous religious paintings such as _The Last Supper_, _Mary and Martha_, _On the Way to Golgatha_, Pilate Washing his Hands_, _Queen of Sheba_, and so on. The performer knows which print has been selected. I have purchased the sources for these effects, made up the props, worked up the presentations, and even field tested them, but I still don't feel entirely comfortable using them. I do feel comfortable doing purely mental magic or even "mentalism" with a full and obvious disclaimer (for example, anyone for whom I perform mental effects knows me as a magician who performs sponge balls and card tricks!) This may be a temporary season of consecration or it may be the Lord's instruction to me for the rest of my life. I don't know. But for now I feel if I do perform these effects, I must present them as purely magical entertainment or Gospel magic.

Max Maven's Autome (or at least an adaptation of it - An extraordinary book test using plain, ungimmicked books (we use Fly Wheel, Facing the Giants, and Fireproof paper back books). The passage forced is the driver for message.

Mr Kif,
Tell me where you picked up the concept? Was it hidden in one of his books, on a DVD or purchased as an entire routine... that you guys eventually adapted? |

Ahhh. Never-mind... I just browsed through my Max Maven Videos (yes "videos") and found it on Video Mind Vol. 1. I remember that one!
Now, I'll have to dust off my VCR and see if I can get the gerbil inside to wake up. |

My personal favorite is a Red Bible force/prediction that I originally saw Duane Laughlin do with 7 large cards, each with a different colored Bible on it. I have adapted it to actually use pocket size New Testements in seven different colors.

One of my favorites right now is an item I developed after a Robert Harbin idea:
It's a nest of envelopes in which the inner-most envelope contains the prediction. The volunteer is basically given 4 options (and really as many options as you need to provide). Nothing is forced - you basically always have 4 "outs" If you want to know more, you'd have to check out the Harbin-cadabra books. |

The idea was inspired from Max's Videomind...but the application was ours. I purchased the three books with the goal of finding something like what Max had done with his routine...but nothing like that was apparent. So I modified the method...have five people write on 3x5 cards a number...fold them in fourths...and then have another pick one...and as I go to the one picking the number...I switch them for a set of five cards folded the same under the stack of cards which all have same number. This was in one of our columns recently in The Voice of FCM magazine. We use a prediction...not read their minds...but that's a personal choice...that doesn't get folks to light torches and get pitchforks.

Brother Kif,
thanks for the enlightenment! I'll have to dig out that copy of the VOICE. Appreciate your willingness to share your ideas! |
