I heard that it is illegal to deface legal tender . As I have found a way to easily gimmick a british coin for a trick I want to find out if I need some licence or permission to produce them .
Does anyone know the English law on this ? Or what coin gaffers normally do? |

The Coinage act of 1971 Sec 10 states in part that :
"Restrictions on melting or breaking of metal coins.— (1) No person shall, except under the authority of a licence granted by the Treasury, melt down or break up any metal coin which is for the time being current in the United Kingdom or which, having been current there, has at any time after 16th May 1969 ceased to be so." This carries with it fines and/or imprisonment. This having been said, it would appear that this is to avoid a reduction in the precious metal which would reduce the coins value or may be a carryover of certain provisions related to the defacing of the monarch's image. Because the statute does not require a fraudulamt purpose be present it would be adviseable to contact a local attorney. A search of the web shows magic stores, brick and mortar, sell some gaffed UK coins. Which would make it seem that you would be able to do what you want. Hope this helps a little. |

Those are good points . That is the kind of thing I had in mind . Its funny that no gaffers have responded to this question . Maybe they know the law and are keeping their heads down . Naughty boys ! |
