I just saw this performed on Saturday, and overal it was a funny routine! I think there were some...akward parts between each position. Some seemed to take longer then others but in general the sudience seemed to enjoy it. Also I'm not sure that I would close my show with it, because although funny, is kinda weak. It doesn't seem like there is that much magic or skill involved just a decently funny routine with a mediocre ending.

I have had the curtain made in the same material as suggested. A quick trip to the local fabric store and $45 later I had the material, then $20 for a local seamstress to sew it together. The material I found was 1.5M wide so 3 drops of 6ft was all that was needed and it looks great. When you are adding the eyelets be sure to practice on some scrap material first as you don't want to go to all that effort and then ruin it by damaging/tearing the material.

For those who just want to buy the curtain ready made I would estimate the cost to be $120 plus postage...it's not so difficult to make..give it a try...if not let me know...and I can look into getting several made.
I gave the escape a test run at a comedy club last night...I thought it went quite well...still not that happy with the jacket on head as a finale, actually I used a pink cardigan, I am going to try an alternate ending and throw the cardigan from inside the tube...a TaDa moment..I have done it!!..and hopefully get the applause when the curtian drops...then finish off as suggested. Would be interested to hear your stories with it. |

I also don't like the jacket on the head. I like your idea Birthday Magician. I would throw the jacket out and drop the curtain while still in the shackles. However, I also think there needs to be a funny visual when the curtain drops, I'm just not sure what that could be. Maybe reading a manual on handcuff escapes?

5 Minutes? From what I've seen - and I've only seen the demo clip - it looks like it could be a bit longer? Am I right - or would that be stretching it?
Thanks... DCB

Will the shackle loop be important? Seems like the one Bill sells is narrow.
I am just trying to figure out what the total cost of this isl. I already have a loop shackle and paid far less than $40 for it. If I have to buy a SPECIAL shackle from Bill or spend an extra $50 just to get a narrow bar, it might not be for me. I really assumed the escape aspect had little to do with the routine. The entertainment is in the gags and the magic is in the speed of getting out. Before seeing the photos I assumed it was cuffs not the bar. Can you use any style of restraints? or will this routine need the type discussed? |

A Birthday Magician toberman,
Good idea to start thinking of an alternate ending to the routine. This not only makes it your own but I agree that tossing the jacket over the top of the curtain combined with an prop appearance, costume change, etc. would give it some added surprise and energy. A Birthday Magician, to start manufacturing and selling a curtain for the routine should only be done with express permission from Anthony Lindan, as he does retain all manufacturing rights to the routine. I realize this cannot be enforced if you go ahead and do so anyways, but I feel confident you will make the right decision. deadcatbounce, The routine as Anthony performs it clocks in at 5 minutes, but there is room for your own creative additions/scripting/gags, etc. that would definitely make it play longer. I have seen the routine play for several audiences in various venues, and I feel the routine is solid 5 minutes and I see no real need to lengthen it. Powermagic, There is nothing 'special' about the shackles, except that they are the ones that have been (and still are) on magic dealers shelves for many years. I have an order of shackles coming in, in July that I am selling as set with the locks and a carrying bag, but there are currently several dealers that are already stocking them. Anthony has not used any other restraint devices, but any restraint device that you quickly and easily get out and back into will work. Sincerely, Bill Abbott |

Hey Bill...about the curtain...at that stage no curtain was being offered and there seemed to be a lot of people wanting one...which is why I suggested...if they really don't want to do it themselves..i would consider making them...but now I see you are offering one for sale...fair enough.
I will try the cardigan tossing and report back on the result...also another idea would be position the helpers front and rear...and then change place with the helper...who ends up shackled inside...would be easy to do given the correct audience seating etc...hey it's just a idea to think about!....or what about tossing out the cardigan and when the curtian lowers you are caught red handed with a large pair of scissors in your hands...hey that could be funny! |

I'm assuming you could add Andrew Mayne's Bisection to your presentation if you wanted!

A Birthday Magician,
I am sorry if I came across heavy. I know you were only trying to fill a need. Thank you for stepping up to help some performers. I think brainstorming alternate endings is a great thing to do. I thought a costume change of some sort at the conclusion would be perfect as well. The four-sided curtain covers you from all angles. Anthony also mentioned that you could also sew pockets in the curtain to hide props to produce. Magicbrent, I am not familiar with Bisection, but it sounds like it could be an interesting visual! Seems like microphone management is going to be an issue with a routine like this?

Hi Guys,
I am delighted to read that you are already thinking about how to make the routine your own. I just wanted to point out the the finale in the routine, as presented, is not the jacket on the head segment. It's the following phase where I explain the handcuffs where put on too tight to escape. I turn around showing that I have my hands locked behind my back. I then turn back around facing the audience and immediately extend a hand to shake the helper's hand and then the other helper's hand. This gets a huge laugh for me and puts me in the 'applause' position. FYI - over the years I have experimented with all sorts of ideas like fake hands, fake feet and a boat load of props. As well, I experimented with other types of jackets like lab coats, bath robes. The real question each performer has ask himself is "Do these extra gags just get a laugh or do they move the routine forward?" As I mention of the DVD, you could carry an extra case of props just for this routine. Myself, I have opted for a routine parred down to the essentials without any extra props to carry. I hope each of you finds the right balance for you. A quick reply to Vorezo's post: "I just saw this performed on Saturday, and overall it was a funny routine! I think there were some...akward parts between each position. Some seemed to take longer then others but in general the audience seemed to enjoy it. Also I'm not sure that I would close my show with it, because although funny, is kinda weak. It doesn't seem like there is that much magic or skill involved just a decently funny routine with a mediocre ending." Vorezo - could you please answer the following questions for me. I would like to know the level of experience and expertise you bring to the discussion. How old are you? How many years have you been performing magic professionally (for money)? How many times per month do you perform professionally (for money)? What types of audience do you perform for? I have been very clear in the marketing materials and the DVD to state up front that this is a tongue-in-cheek COMEDY routine. If you are looking for a deep magical mystery you need not look here. This is a wonderful routine to ENTERTAIN your audience. I strongly disagree with your point that there is "no magic or skill" involved. On the contrary it requires a skill that many magicians have a lot of trouble with - the ability to be entertaining. ___________________________________________________________________ Please keep posting your experiences with the routine. Thanks. Anthony Lindan |

Anthony,
Let me be the first...uh...the ninth...uh, hell with it...the LATEST to congratulate you on a GREAT escape. I just posted my review at "Trick Talk" at http://www.hocus-pocus.com and I LOVE it. Oh, I should point out that I HATE most escapes. I find them incredibly boring, but yours is a delight. To anyone on the fence, This is a WORKER. If you're looking for some neat, fancy 'gadget' to amuse your friends, stay far away...but if you perform for money...er, uh...if you earn a living performing magic, this is a STEAL. Cris Johnson |

Thanks Chris! A very nice and thorough review, as are all of your reviews. I'd be interested in hearing a follow-up review after you have put it into you show and have road tested the Escape.
We have now made it official that we are manufacturing the Curtain of Death for the Suit Jacket Escape, and the Shackle Sets are available for pre-order and shipping mid-July. All the details are on the Suit Jacket webpage here: http://www.billabbottmagic.com/public/IS......ProID=21 Just scroll down to the end of the page to see the details on the Curtain and the Shackles. Thanks Kamal.
The first batch of Curtains of Death are on their way and they look FANTASTIC! Anthony's wife did a beautiful job on them and the detail work is incredible. One of the great things about the type of fabric used, is when it's folded it compacts into a very small bundle and when opened it doesn't hold the wrinkles and is ready to go. I have used this as a closer several times now...in a comedy club and at corporate gigs...it is a winner! I have had fellow magicians and layman come up and say it was great. With stage lights on the curtain...wow...it looks amazing...I have added the mission impossible music and that also works well.
It is a solid, humorous routine...and will definately remain my closer.....don't underplay the very 1st cuff escape, pause, let the audience absorb what has happened...I did it tonight and it got a big cheer and applause....at a comedy club....I did film it so may put it up on youtube sometime. |

To Mr. Lindan - It does not matter if I am 7 years old or 70. If you are selling it as a comedy routine then great, but it wasnt super funny and not that magicaly impressive. This is from an audience view point and the general reactions. The audience was mostly magicians and maybe it did not play as well.
