I have an ancient Crystal Silk Cylinder that I bought in the '70s from Hull Brothers' Magic. Now I see a lot of them that come with a second tube.
What is the second tube for? Thanks, Amos McCormick
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Amos,
The second tube is to transfer the load, which allows you to show (apparently) both tubes empty before the production/change. Start, remove outer tube, show it, replace it, and as you're doing so, steal the load into it, set it aside (upright...duh..), and remove the other tube, showing it (and the clear tube) empty. Place a couple of silks into the clear tube, put on the smaller tube (empty) and put in the load as you replace the outer tube. The second tube also hides any compression of the silks placed into the clear tube as you put the loaded tube on. That help, ole buddy? Steve Thomas |

The first time I saw the trick I was blown away, the second time I could figure it out.

Although I have never seen it done, I know how it is done. Is it obvious to laypersons? I would have thought so. I was considering getting one for my children's shows. I think it might be combined with Stratosphere for a nice routine.

It works great for children, but I wouldn't use it on anybody over about 8 years old (and that may be a debateable age).

OK. You all may not agree with me on this, but I have found the Silk Cylinder with the Addition to be a great trick for all ages.
When I used doves, I would always use it to produce one. Here is the routine. Show the tube to contain two silks (do all the correct moves to show the tube only contains the two silks). One red, one white. Put them in the tube, and do the bit about the red turning white and the white red! (Laughs) Next, put the white inside the red and place in the tube and cover it. Do the bit about making the white fly out invisibly to your pocket (it's there - I can see it). Now make the white go back from your pocket into the red. (More laughs) Then say you'll cause the white silk to fly out visibly. Use Bang Wand. The silk doesn't fly out. Apologize that something must have gone wrong. Try it again (bang wand). Nothing happens. Say you better check it out. Take tubes off so audience sees red silk. Pull red silk out and white silk has changed into a dove. Now before you say it won't fool anyone, all I can say it that I performed this for about 15 years and it received tremendous response. Were people being kind to me? Maybe, but I don't think so. This was one trick that people always remembered when they spoke to me. I feel that the transformation of silk to dove was what made the trick strong. When you take the outer tubes off and everything looks the same, the audience really believes nothing happened at that point. When the dove appears there was always an audilble gasp or laughter, and spontaneous applause. Some may feel the two gags make the routine too long, but I moved through it fast and the bang wand adds interest. I got the idea from the Abbott's publication "Tops Treasury of Dove Magic." Ren Fetzer contributed a routine where a piece of tissue turns into an egg and then the egg is put into the tube. The egg then turns into a dove. If you try this out, be sure not to load the dove too early or use the trick too late in the show. One magician who asked for permission to do the routine told me later that he produced a dead dove. If I still had my doves, it would be in every show. Terry

The "Crystal Silk Cylinders" is a fine piece of utility equipment.
It is so versatile, ie: Halloween.... "sugar", foil and paper in ... mini fancy candybars out. Silks to tennis balls...... unpopped corn to popped corn.... a production for your "the end" silk.... anything that fits in reservoir to anything that will fit in tube. Helpful tip: put a small rubber ball into it to hold thingy up and add height with stick on feet to give escaping air freedom of movement. I haven't used one in years (burnt up) I had many, many kids ask where that stuff came from. Between the silk cylinder and the, highly touted, stratosphere I would go hands down for silk cylinders. I don't use an addition with mine, but when I bought it the addition was not offered. I sealed all seams in the load chamber with silicone and filled it with water and gold fish. I change an orange silk into the fish and used it for all ages and get a great response every time. The addition for the silk cylinder complicates the effect and draws attention to the method. There is no reason to be screwing around with an extra tube. The transformation and the way the tube is handled should imply that the tube is empty. (if you use the goldfish idea be sure you have the strength to handle the tube as though it were empty, as the water will add considerable weight.)

I have found that correct handling of and patter for the two tubes negates any concept of "screwing around with an extra tube."
The extra tube also hides the fact that the silk is compressed (an action which can be seen) when covered by the tube. Each of us performs as we see fit, but if the one tube handling can truly convince the spectators that the tube is empty, I need a lesson in handling and showmanship, (and I truly may) because I do not believe I could convince them of such. Of course, I don't care that much for Stratospheres either, especially that hinged door ball vanish cabinet! Terry

I use mine to change a red, white and blue silk into an American Flag. During football season I use it to change an orange silk and white silk into a Tennessee Vols flag, since I am a Tennessee football fan. I do this to the fight song. Tennessee fans love it!

The free hand should be placed in front of the clear cylinder just above the base as if to steady it. This helps shield the fact that the silk is being crushed away. Also, the tube sliding over another object, ( the clear cylinder) implies emptiness.
The object here is to handle the tube over the cylinder smoothly and not stop to make adjustments to the load. If you put the tube on in one motion and not stop or move to slowly I grantee no layman will notice anything concerning the silk. showing the tube empty afterwards casually without drawing attention to the fact proves absence of the silk. I believe that when the spectators reconstruct what happened the believe they were show the tube was empty prior to the transformation. One last point I would like to make is that in using a liquid load and live gold fish audiences seem to have trouble conceiving that this could have been concealed in an open top and bottom receptacle such as the tube. I have always received compliments on this effect and have yet to be called on not showing the tube empty beforehand, so don't run if your not being chased. Ronald R. Romiski |
