As you can all tell from my post number I'm relatively new to the Café, but I've been into magic for a little while. I would say that my learning ability is high and I've been able to master many sleights in various categories of difficulty.
But In the near future I'm looking to purhasing a comprehensive DVD set to help flesh out my card skills and add variety to my routine. Mainly I'm into close up magic, and I'm not sure on what set I should invest in. Now I've heard lots about Jeff McBrides AoM set and Daryls EOCS. But I have to admit the $220 price tag on Darly's vids make me want to stear away from them. I'm sure both are great investments, but these seem to to be the only ones I hear the most noise about. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas please let me know. Your thoughts are much appreciated. - Brandon

I've heard great things about Bill Malone's On the Loose set. Or, if you want books, you could check out the Art of Astonishment series.

Hi Graymatter_Fireworks
I have the Jeff McBride series and almost all of the Daryl vids. I can say only good things about them both. There are probably the best video sets I have ever bought. I highly recommend them. On the Daryl EOCS, he doesn't teach many tricks(there are a few), but mostly moves so you can make your own tricks. Good Luck with whatever you choose. Joe.A++ |

Are you looking for a set on sleights or effects? Either way, I don't think you can you can go wrong with Michael Ammar's Easy To Master Card Miracles series.

Thinking about this I believe just about any of the above recommendations will help you. All are highly praised throughout this site. If you are looking to learn tricks, go with Ammar, Sankey, of Malone. If you want strictly "moves" go with Daryl (regardless of price...it is worth it), or McBride. In my opinion, the EOCM is the better of the two. |

EDIT: With my reply below, I may have gotten a bit off topic. If the choice is between EOCS and AOM and you're looking to flesh out your card skills - EOCS.
However, I'd only recommend EOCS if you're the kind of person who can learn musical scales and compose songs with them. EOCS is merely a collection of tools, it's up to you to already have the knowledge to use them. Marko's got the right idea. I have Daryl's EOCS and it's AMAZING, but what I've used the most is Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles (ETMCM.) I don't think you'll be disappointed either way, but ETMCM rocks. |

I love Jeff's AoM. Manipulation is my favorite type of work. But most of his stuff is not meant for close-up. Keep that in mind.

Daryl's DVD set is definitely for new comers, Ammar's DVD set is also excellent. I would say if you think you are comfortable with those materials, you can go to Malone's DVD set.

finance dragon i waws looking into buying Jeffs Manipulation set. But now im thinking twice after hearing its not for closeup. does this mean i need to be on a stage for the effects to work. how close is "close-up"

My first video was Michael Ammars ETMCM 2, and within minutes of watching this tape I was making people believe it was real magic...great for begingers and intermediate

ETMCM is excellent for learning effects. The problem with ETMCM is that some sleights aren't explained, for instance the DL is not very well explained. Though the question is about DVD's I would sugesst one of the following ...
Books with DVD suppliment -- I'm using Card College + EOCS or do Royal Road + ETMCM Dave ETMCM with EOCS to suppliment -- Just buy the EOCS volumes you need at first then build on it.

Brandon,
I would recommend the Card College books by Robert Giobbi. Maybe Royal Road to Card Magic. Then pick up the a Volume of Daryl's EOC series. You can find out what is on the tapes and select according to what it is that you want to learn. What is nice about Daryl's tapes is that he teaches a trick with each move and you can practice while you perform. Hope this helps. Frank |

I think that the best advice here depends on what you actually want to learn. Jeff McBride's tapes are the Art of Card Manipulation and can only be done on stage, not for close up at all. They are basically the type of magic that you see McBride doing, ie: pulling cards out of the air from nowhere. This type of magic is very angly and should not be performed up close. Daryl's EOCS is meant to teach you the proper handling of the sleights involved with many tricks but doesn't teach you many tricks, so you're left with a million ways to do nothing really. Ammar's ETMCM vids are probably the best bet, they teach you killer effects that I and many other magicians use on a consistent basis I'm sure just don't let the name EASY TO MASTER throw you off. The effects can be learned by beginners with practice, but the impact is professional quality, I think i use tons of the routines from those vids while doing my walkaround. AoA is a great read but I don't think it's geared towards the beginner. Now, I haven't seen much of Brad Burt so I can't give you details on that...but for my money you just can't beat anything that Ammar puts out because alot of thought and work go into his products. Also if you want to dedicate yourself to one effect with alot of good sleights, Daryls' ambitious card video is also very nice. Well, I hope that helps clear things up.

Here is a DVD set that only has two DVDs and will cost you $60. This would be a cheap way to start out in card magic.
The first DVD that I would suggest is the Born to Perform Card Magic DVD by Oz Pearlman. It costs $30 and is sold by Penguin Magic. This DVD would be your beginner card magic DVD. The next DVD I would suggest would be the Stealing Pips: The Card Magic of Oz DVD. This DVD is also by Oz Pearlman. It costs $30 and like the other DVD is also sold by Penguin Magic. This DVD would be your advance card magic DVD. If you had the money I would just by both of these DVDs. Both would be good to learn from. Oz is a great teacher and his The Card Magic of Oz DVD has been given a great review by Genii Magazine. With both of these DVDs you would have your card magic down pat and could then move on to other card tricks, card magic books, and/or other card magic DVDs that you like. Hope this helps.

Hi Brandon,
At your level, I really think that Daryl's EOCS is one of the best ways to go. This set is expensive, but it is also quite superb for teaching a whole range of card sleights in a technically stylish way. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Regards, Paul H |
