They do at first but quickly they stop working/splatting. Am I doing anything wrong?

Clean them and dry. Then spray with hair spray and works great. I use all time.

Sometimes you also get a bad batch. But dipping in water and drying with a towel helps.

Yes Will, but when they dry they don't stick any more. The hair spray gives a nice sticky residue on ball wich is key when you need to splat.
