I used to be able to download ebooks and MP3 files in IE (I'm using 8.0.6), just by right clicking, and clicking "Save As".
However, at some point that preferences got changed, and I don't like the way it now is. I can no longer "Save As". It just doesn't give me that option. Now, when I right click on a link (PDF or MP3), it only gives me the option of "Save Target As". The other option is "Print Target". Save Target only saves a link back to the online webpage... not helpful at all. I want to be able to download MP3s and ebooks once again. Any advice on how to put the preference back to just "Save As", and get rid of "Save Target As"? Note - I'm also having the same problem with Firefox. So, this download problem is not unique to IE. - Donald P.S. I set my default MP3 player as iTunes, instead of Windows Media. But I've used that setting before without any problems.

Yeah, I hate how they make fundamental changes to software.
The PDF is easy: just let it load, then click the save button provided by Adobe. As for MP3s, I hardly run into them, but I use the same solution I used for everything I want to download: a downloader for Firefox called download helper. I have a few friends who swear by Orbit, but I've never managed to get it to work properly for me. You know how these things are: what works for one doesn't always work for others. But I stopped "right-clicking" a couple of years ago for the same problem you just described. Try download helper in Firefox. I haven't used IE for at least five years, so I can't say anything about that. |

Yes, I was able to get around the PDF problem by letting it load, and then saving.
I'm still hoping for a solution, especially for the MP3s. - Donald

Can you link to an MP3, just so we can play around with the possibilities?

OK, I was able to download some of the MP3s using Firefox. I don't use FF as often as IE, so I'm not as used to it.
I can't link to the MP3s I'm trying to download, as they are for members only (of the groups I belong to) / private links. Mostly, they are replays of teleconferences. - Donald

Right. It's just that I almost never run into MP3s. Funny, because I have some at my own website. Now that I think of it, I could test it there.
In case anyone else wants to try, it's: http://www.cowboysongs.de This is in no way an advertisement. For a ton of reasons, I hate every single recording we've ever made. My music partner and I can't ever agree on this stuff. Makes you wonder how bands with four or five members can ever put a record out. Anyway, if interested you have to click through to the CDs to get samples to download. |

Yup. Same problem on your website, in IE.
I tried with The Great Speckled Bird. When I right click, the only option is "Save Target As." No "Save As" option at all. If I just click it normally, it pops open a new page and plays the song in an online Quicktime audio player. And I can't download from there. - Donald P.S. Nice song!

Donald, a quick test with Firefox easily saved an MP3 with a right click and "save target as".
In IE, Orbit (which as I said above is installed but I never use) took over the download with my right click and "save target as", so I'm still unsure about IE. Still, it seems your problem would be solved if you would just use Firefox. |

I was able to get it to work in IE, even though it still says "Save Target As". When I clicked on that, it gave me the option of saving it as a file, not a link.
Sometimes in the past, it wouldn't let me save it as the proper file type. I'll have to see if I run into the problem again. - Donald
