And last but not least, do not throw a bunch of random figures just to make your point ... There are people here, including myself, that have been around the world once or twice and that have even lived for some time in different nations. Probably you would not want to discount their knowledge of different cultures and religions... Ok? Thank you!

I have lived in Europe and have been all over the world. To call people cowards shows that you haven't been around, my friend. There are things that you don't mess with without being in harm’s way. If people can die just for drawing a cartoon of someone from a book, think what would happen if you used THE book in an evil matter, such as mentalism. If you are not part of THE group you are not considered to matter and stopping you from breathing is not a sin. Europe is full of cowards, perhaps not more than elsewhere but still far more than would be desired in a healthy society. The Danish cartoons issue is one of Europe's most embarassing of recent years and the initial bullying by murderous islamists was only made worse by the number of cowardly people running newspapers and magazines that refused to republish the images for 'security' reasons accompanied by a symphony of public intelectuals and politicians that ranged from being cowardly and not wishing to publicly state thier true thoughts on the matter to members of the misguided Left who were too wrapped up in their relativistic thinking and instead of condemning the murderous bullies condemned the cartoonists and the publishers. This is completly forgetting figures from other religions who also comdemned the cartoons, presumably out of a want to perpetrate respect for religion. Cowards, fools and bullies a plenty. As for performing mentalism with one of the holy books, if you are worried only about offending people then I'd say stop worrying. If you are seriously worried about coming to physical harm then I suspect there are more valiant ways you can further the cause of free expression. Of course this is all somewhat moot if your reason for using one of the holy books is weak - and this needs to be assessed in reference to the potential damage to your performances and reputation vs the benifit of using the book. If your reason is strong, you can get away with offending a lot of people. MagicFreak said: Quote:
In short... You sicken me by your utter lack of tact and respect for, well most of the world. You do know that only 16% of the world put themselves into your class of progressives, right? Eshla is talking sense in this thread and I think you have it almost exactly wrong. What do you mean by the term 'respect'? I recently heard Salman Rushdie speak at a PEN event where he put forward the notion that the word is constantly misused. He suggests and I'm inclined to agree with him, that when it is used in reference to religious belief, it can only sensibly mean 'to take seriously the fact that someone believes it'. It doesn't mean one shouldn't criticise a belief, that you mustn't condem it or any of the other things the result from people saying "You have to respect X so..." If we really must play the respect game, then I wonder where the respect for free expression resides? Respect for the rule of law? Respect for democracy?

Penn & Teller performed a wonderful Biblical book test in their live touring show years ago.
It involved children throwing darts at a "Biblical Dart Board" to choose sections of the Bible, and a gigantic dice rolled over the heads of the audience and tossed on stage to select a line number. The night that I saw the show, the first little boy who threw a dart was named Damien. Brrr. The audience loved it. - entity

Nice try to egg me on though, I appreciate the encouragement. Davit, free speech exists, so use it, but at the same time, you can use it in some very stupid ways that will get you in deep ****. I personally choose to withhold my freedom of speech when performing for a group of individuals with different beliefs so that I might entertain without offending. If you choose to do otherwise, so be it, but I don't admire you for your "courage". |
