A new comedy mental effect based on the new term UNSHOP which means to return something to a store because you bought too much and can't afford it.
The performer invites a male participant to take an imaginary shopping trip. He is told to imagine he has gone to a men's store and is going to buy a new outfit, including a coat, shirt, tie, belt, pants, socks and even shoes. He is told that when he gets to the counter he discovers he bought too much and has to return something to the shelf. The participant decides on an article of clothing to UNSHOP and is given the chance to change his mind. He doesn't tell the performer the article he returned, but not to worry, the performer has an envelope marked RETURNS and says inside is a prediction. He pulls out a large bar code and says this is the barcode for the article (old gag but with a new killer ending). Performer then asks the person what article of clothing he returned. Assume he said, "Pants." Performer exclaims he was correct insisting that this is the barcode for a pair of pants...finally as a means of self-defense the performer says on the other side is a picture of someone wearing HIS NEW OUTFIT, minus the item he returned. Upon turning the barcode over, there is seen a large comical photo of a man wearing a coat, shirt, tie, socks and shoes...however, he is missing the pants. The performers says, "You should have kept the pants!" A very commercial effect that breathes new life into the old barcode gag. |

No doubt that this will be top notch.

Very nice premise. It's not something I would do, purely on the grounds that I have such a deep, seething, intense hatred for people who do that in line in front of me, that I would never use an effect that presented such an activity as being in any way socially acceptable. In fact I consider it yet another benchmark of societal decay that we now have a "fun and trendy" term (which I had never heard before this thread) for the act of being both too inept to keep a ballpark running total in your head, and too lazy and inconsiderate to use the calculator function on the cell phone you're mindlessly jabbering on while the cashier tries to ring you out. The only way I could see myself performing it is if I added a kicker ending where I berated the spec into choosing an amount of money that he would give to all the people in line behind him as compensation for wasting their time... which it turned out I also predicted.
Hmm, now that I think about it, with that added phase it does sound kind of fun! At any rate, best of luck with it.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

Last year when I was at the Webster site, checking words for my Word Sight, there was a list of NEW trendy words just created in the last year or two. UNSHOP was one of those words. Like most of you I had never heard of the word, but I immediately thought, this word has the potential for a clever and commercial effect. I gave much thought to the presentation. I had Becky take photos of me missing parts of my outfit and printed them off on my computer. I tested various photos, methods and presentations in front of audiences and finally developed a super clean method and found the photo that works the best. This is now a regular part of my act and is a guaranteed laugh getter. Since the word UNSHOP is so new, it makes for a very interesting presentation as you explain this new word to the audience. One thing this effect will do is show that the audience you are trendy and up with the times. Devin |

"Sounds" like a free choice, so does that mean that the outcome can be different each time?
I do fairs and such and rotate effects for each show but sometimes have repeat audience members. Thanks. |

This is the description provided at the top of the page:

Assume he said, "Pants." In my view it could be a good idea to mention in the description that the participant has to pick a card to determine which article of clothing is choosen. While it is true that he does not tell the performer which article was choosen, he has to pick a card. When I bought, based on the description, I assumed that the participant did not have to say anything nor pick a card. My 2 cents Best Dom |
