How do you disguise the s***l as a real ball? Just pointers and stuff that I may not have realized, I'm just not sure how to sell it to angles other then straight on.

So how do you get around the fact that it is a shell, if you don't really sell it as a real ball?

There are 2 moves I can think of that seemingly show the ball on both side, I think they are both Ganson's moves and another maybe Frank Garcia.
See Routined Manipulation and Magic Inc. for the Frank Garcia books. I suggest you get some reference material, this will answer your questions and help you create an original routine. Levent has a huge DVD set on Billiard Balls and well as Jeff McBride, but I would not discount books. |

Forgot to mention that the Shimada video on Manipulation and Denny's Magic are great as well. You have to watch very carefully or you will miss some really fantastic moves or effects.
Shamada talks about performing in the modern style with audiences in uncomfortable seating. This is also covered in some of the famous street/buskers performances. |

Alan Wakeling's routine uses the sh*ll in a novel way, the ball is never produced from the sh*ll. The sh*ll is there for some strong vanishes and some impossible moves, but it is never blatantly used. A very zen-like handling. You can find it in The Magic of Alan Wakeling by Jim Steinmeyer.

I do the Alan Wakeling routine because of the elegance and the handling of the balls. It is very different from the usual multiplying billiard balls. You can see the influences from one of his mentors, the great Roy Benson.

Where could I see a video of Alan Wakeling's routine?

If you do a search, someone posted a video of someone doing his routine very poorly. If you seen the television specials of Worlds Greatest Magicians, you could see Mark Kalin performing his version of Wakeling routine. I suggest you do some searching on your own. |

Ok. So I have a set of Fakini's and I've created a routine but it's clearly not as good as it could be. I'm trying to iron out technicalities in all of my moves and then look into a better, more complex routine. So no, I am not just fishing for answers but I'm trying to make my routine better.
Thanks!

Well if you do not like Ganson, Wakeling, Garcia, Shimada, or Jeff McBride, then I cannot suggest anything further. These are the top Billiard Ball routines in the world as a starting point to create your own routine.
Good luck with whatever you may be looking for in your magic. |

Is Rooklyn's routine published anywhere?

I don't know if it had a specific routine in it, but it was suppose to be like an Encyclopedia and even tell how to make your own Billiard Balls and Shells. |

The Rooklyn book is called _Spherical Sorcery and Recollections of a Pro_. It includes details of his billiard ball act and an autobiographical reflection of his career. Definitely worth adding to your library if you can find a copy, I was fortunate to find an autographed copy in a used bookstore.

Anatole, that is the book I was thinking of, he was South American as I recall, as he only ran one ad in a magic magazine. I think a lot of the books got burned-up in one of Tannen's fires. I remember getting a New Stars of Magic with smoke damage on it. It was more difficult to order from out-of-country back then. Really took a long time for the mail to get to and from a foreign country.
I would like to read that book, I bet it has a lot of good information in it. I don't remember ever reading Rooklyn appearing at magic conventions in the USA. The book would have been more popular if he had, and maybe more available at the time. I don't believe any articles were written about him, either, but he was suppose to be a master Billiard Ball manipulator. |

Matt,
I think what you are really asking is not how you "sell" it to an audience but how do you become comfortable with it. The reason you are asking the question is because in your mind the audience from any other angle than straight ahead can see what it truly is. You are not comfortable with it because you think they can see it. But the audience does not know what you know; they don’t know what or where to look or when. Unless you tell them; and you can tell them if you are self-conscious about it. This comes from lack of practice. You have to practice your routine until you become comfortable performing it. During your practice you will come up with different moves and different ways of doing something. Or you may get an idea of something really neat or jaw dropping. The whole process is a learning experience; it evolves. When you finally become comfortable with what you are doing, then the audience will not see what you don’t want them to. You have to believe your own magic if you want the audience to believe it. And once they believe it, they won’t even be looking for the gimmick. Now how do you get to that point? You already have a base to work from. Buy or borrow every book, tape, dvd, lecture notes, that you can find. A lot have already been mentioned here. Read, watch, and study this material. You want to know everything you can learn about the billiard balls that you can get your hands on. You won’t use it all! But you will pick up a lot of moves and effects that you can change or you may want to incorporate into your routine. Then join a magic club that has some “OLD TIMERS” or professionals as members, instructors, or mentors. Or go to a magic shop that professionals hang out. “May I show you my routine? I would love to hear any suggestions that you may have for improvement.” If you are lucky enough to get some people that know what they are talking about to watch your routine and give you comments, LISTEN!. Don’t open your mouth because when you mouth is open your ears are closed. And you cannot learn with an open mouth! Don’t start giving a bunch of excuses as to why you are doing this or that, just listen to what is being told to you. You may not like it or think it is worth anything but listen and save what you can use and toss what you don’t want to use. And say Thank you, you appreciate their input or help. Then later on when you change your routine or put something new it in that person may be willing to watch it again and give you more pointers. Don’t forget your inner circle of friends, especially if they are magicians. I have stood before a magician friend for hours going over and over a single routine. He would sit there and say “Flash”, “Flash”, “Flash”, until I could finally do it without flashing. But it took work and we would have to go over every detail and try different angles of holding the hand. Work out your angles by hiding the edge with your finger, thumb, arm, face, or whatever. Strike a pose at a critical moment if necessary and use misdirection at the right time to hide something that is obvious. But most of all believe in your magic. |
