Just tell the audience,
"Here is a real billiard ball. Solid as can be. All the way around. Even on the back. I won't show it to you but trust me, it's a genuine ball". If that doesn't work, just treat it as if it's a real ball. Why try to convince people of something they already know to be true? If that doesn't work, pony up the money and buy the McBride DVDs or the Tim Wright DVD and learn the basics. Charlie Frye also has a great routine. I usually buy everything I can get my hands on and during the viewings, something will catch my eye as wonderful, easy to accomplish an deceptive and I will use that. Other things that are wonderful, difficult and deceptive I will learn over time if I think they are worthwhile.

There are a couple of methods here to seemingly show both sides of the shell:

I know of no existing video footage of Alan Wakeling performing his billiard ball routine. However, he worked as creative director on Mark Wilson's Magic Land of Allakazam, and I remember seeing video of Mark and/or his son Greg performing a billiard ball routine and I'm pretty sure it was the Wakeling routine.

But you need to give them some good reasons to do so first. It's like the common example of taking out a deck and saying that the deck is normal, assuming the audience is already asking if it's normal or not. When you do something magical with it, of course they will be asking if the deck is normal, but our job is then to show them otherwise using subtle actions. (finding the exact moment is quite difficult, you need study based on theory and experience) I also like the Benson quote from the "Benson on Starlight" that you should also provide some mystery on the elements you use, so you don't need to pass everything for examination (for stage magic, this is much more difficult than in close up). As always, it's an opinion, I'm glad to share thoughts. Hope to hear more feedback. Antonio |

Whit,
I like your routine, and yes, that's the "show both sides" way to do it. My routine is much simpler and I haven't mastered that move. It sure is a unique routine, and I am grateful you shared it with us! Thanks! Doug |

As wmhegbli wrote before, Garcia has a good move. In his little booklet "Billard balls - moves - routines - ideas" (1960), Frank Garcia describe a pivot move with the sh*** on pages 10-11. I've used it in all my billard balls routines and clearly it was very efficient and easy to do.
However, I found that there is no billard balls manipulation routine more satisfying than the ones without sh***s. |

I must admit, I don't, and never have, used a shell. It makes life much easier

See if any of your magic friends has an available tape of Ger Copper. Yes, I said "tape". At the time it was televised, VCR was the way to save programs. But, it would be worth your time, if you want to see all things "billiard".
