So I heard there was some magic on Wednesday evenings show and I took a quick look at the episode online. Sure enough it was a young performer I had seen at Magic Live last summer by the name of Jason Andrews. He was part of a special presentation that Joanie Spina couched him on. He was simply amazing .. a slick, polished performer.
I could not believe it was the same guy on national television presenting a Sword Basket with a 70's theme to it .. for real. Nothing against him .. but, it fell flat and the judges gave him the axe. Now here is what I'm thinking .. this was some sort of set-up .. right, a gag of some sort that he was in on. I know this show is notorious for this type of thing .. but, I'd like to find out what was really going on here. I can't believe this young performer would commit career suicide just to get his name out there .. Please tell me what happened .. again, let me stress this dude was phenomenal last time I saw his act. I'm not picking on him .. Steve |

I saw it too Steve and was a little confused on whether he was trying to do the illusion as comedy or that he was just having a very bad performance.

I watched that painful episode and cringed. Not only was the performance "flat" but the assistant was literally pulling the swords through the basket. In reality, there is absolutely NO NEED for the assistant to pull the swords through the basket and I couldn't imagine anyone peforming this classic illusion in this manner. Mind you, I also couldn't imagine anyone using a sword basket as big and ugly as the one I saw.
I really hope you are right in suggesting this was staged. Kent

I should have gone right to the source before posting this but, I was just puzzled.
I just dropped Jason a note and we'll see if he's got something to say about his experience on the show. Joanie has also joined the Café recently .. maybe she'll join in the discussion. I of course will probably get scolded .. my bad. Steve |

If you listen to Kevin James' interview on Reelmagic a while back, he tells how he was set up to fail, like many magicians are.
AGT is not a talent show like the old days of Star Search. It's BS for those that think their child is the next <insert blond teenage disney star here> |

They normally look for a story that will in the end make the show look like the champ. Like look how good you have become because of us..
I think that the TV show is a Joke of a show and I'm not a fan. Taylor

All this may be true, but none of these facts explain why someone who has been dedicated so completely to their craft would allow themselves to be represented on national television as an ignorant fledgling.
I saw Jason Andrews as part of Joanie Spina's lecture at Magic Live also, and the commitment and energy he put into his routine was inspiring. It was absolutely beautiful. I spoke to him after the lecture and told him so; it was one of the best things I saw at Magic Live. Knowing what he is capable of only made watching the show more upsetting. |

I did not catch the episode. I spent some time with Jason last fall in LA. I have also judged him at SAM national conventions. This is not the caliber of work he does.
The only answer I can give is that is was a scripted performance, Once he signed the dotted line, he had not choice but to perform it as written. They say that bad publicity is better than no publicity but in this case you have to wonder. In any event, Jason is definitely a good performer and this show is not indicative of his talents. Richard

That is how he performed it on his promotional video, so I don't think it was scripted by America's Got Talent. I am surprised we haven't seen more magicians this year. I know a few magicians from L.A. and Dallas who made it through the auditions and they weren't shown.

Like I said .. I should have gone right to the source first and Jason dropped me a note. He did mention that the producers didn't want to see the old top hat and tails .. that explains what we saw. I guess we only saw a short portion of his act and the way it was cut, we only saw the Sword Basket. Again .. it was live and things happen, anyone that works knows about that.
With all that said, I'm still kinda puzzled ... Steve |

Has anyone ever tried performing an Origami Illusion for the auditions? I'd be interested to see if it gets through. I know its cliché to us, but most laymen have never even heard ot it. I certainly hadn't till I joined the Café.
I like to think that with some good scripting (not music!) and a pretty girl it would go down very well. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd like to hear what other people think. Tom xx

The problem with performing magic for AGT is that you are limited to 90 seconds MAX. The FCC considers it is a game show and to make it fair everyone has the same amount of time to perform....i.e. face time. Trying to script and then perform in 90 seconds is nearly impossible! If you go over, they will cut it down to the allotted time to make it fair for all performers.

I couldn't imagine doing Origami in 90 seconds .. last summer we changed up the music and got it down to four minutes.
You would really have to work fast .. and that could lead to mistakes. If you don't fold things just right .. you wind up with a big mess. The producers of the show would just love that! Steve |

Here's Jason's act after being coached by Joanie:
http://www.magicmagazine.com/demos-downl......ter.html I think all Magicians should say no to any 'reality TV show' until they stop with the 'coaching', they sure as hell aren't Joanie Spina. That's the reason Kevin was booted off, and Im sure that was some of the issues of why the Pendragons left (contract issues). With the advent of Youtube, the failures (as successes) are there for everyone to see. It's not a Star Search or Ted Mack/Major Bowles Orginial Amateur Hour. I still think some idiot network suit is hoping that in one of the live shows, someone dies and that will give them ratings through the roof. Welcome to the 21st century, where the real talent doesn't stand a chance. |

Yes, there is the act I remember Jason doing at Magic Live. You can see why I was confused by what appeared on America's Got Talent. I honestly thought it was some sort of set-up. If you haven't already, take a look at his act as posted by ricker above.
Nice work guys at adding the links .. it's very helpful to get the point across. I'm still a little behind on my computer skills ... Steve |

Yeah I was surprized to see that happen to Jason. I have seen Jason a few years ago when he was touring with Steve Daly. Jasons act was amazing! It was kind of sad to see this happen to him. Also on the Dallas auditions I think I saw Brian Brushwood. I didn't see him acctually preform but I saw a person with spikey hair that looked like him. Does anyone know anything about this?

90 seconds? Ew!
Here in Brazil you can get up to 6 minutes. I've seen some make it up to 10, though. |
