I'm working on this routine currently but don't like the idea of switching one gimmick for the other in the two left inside jacket pockets as described in the instructions. I thought of using a holder of some type to hold the second gimmick and pinning it on my left side under my coat. For those that do Billy's routine how do you handle the switch? Thank you for the help.

I've always thought that part was a bit tedious, but watching Billy, you never noticed. Using a topit to ditch the first while going for the second would be an easy time-saver, especially if the second were pinned in an easily grabbed position. Good luck!

I just go in the outside pocket or case and just switch them.
You are right with Billy's constant patter it was never noticed. It was simply an older man fumbling a bit while trying to explain what happened. I think you are worrying about something that does not have to be worried about. Richard

It is still good to be more creative and make the handling your own. What works best is what make you feel confident in your handling and presentation.
Billy McComb was not an old man when he started performing this, remember it was in his 25 years in magic book, back in the late 1960's. Wish I did not sell that book, but at the time I did not think it had much 'meat' therein, and I found the descriptions/explanations hard to understand. That is a good idea, to put with one hand and take with another. It should be practiced and worked out so it is quick and the timing is perfect. Bob Sanders sells a good egg dropper that would work perfectly with this larger gimmick. You have to email Bob Sanders about it, not very expensive and it is very well made. He put a feature in it that makes it very versatile for just about anything. |

Why switch gimmicks? Get a larger palmo style gimmick and all the silks can be contained therein. I've done it this way for 30 years and even Billy McComb said it was very practical.

JNeal, I think Billy McCombs Tape gimmick is very large to start with, do you have any suggestions on design and who would make it.
I use 2 Palmo for the effect currently, and cannot see how putting a third silk in with the explaination in the routine would work very well. Maybe I just don't understand exactly what you are refering to. Nice to see you posting again! |

Billy's gimmick as written up are larger than they need to be. I believe the original called for 2 1/2" in length. I have been able to cut it down to a little over two inches.
While the Palmo method has some advantages, I like the showing of the two silks separate at the same time with the gimmick in the right hand. I think it all boils down to a personal preference. One thing I did add is a bump on one edge of my tubes so I can tell which end to have up when I steal it into my hand. Richard

Richard,
You can furnish the silks for this trick, can't you? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Yes, I can and have made them up in special color schemes for guys. Red/Yellow, Blue/yellow, Black/ orange, Turqouise/Fuschia and some others ones I can't remember right now.
One thing to note.. Billy's gimmick and routine can use 14"- 6 momme silks. The Levent gimmick will only hold 5 momme 15". I have been able to downsized to a 12" 6 momme to fit the Levent gimmick. Richard

I can get three 18" (lightweight ) silks in the Levent gimmick without any problem.
WmHegBil, and Richard, one CAN display the two solid colored silks and retain the 1/2 dyed one in the gimmick (in the right hand) as a normal part of the routine. this allows you to do the entire McComb routine without any need to go to the coat at any point during the middle of the effect. As Richard points out, it is personal preference ... but this allows for a very uncomplicated performance. WmHegbil, It's great to be posting again. I've been so busy with shows and bookings of late... that sometimes I just don't get much of a chance to comment here. Even now, I'm just waiting on a flight to start my summer season. But I'll try harder. Regards- JNeal

JNeal- Glad to hear you are busy. I understand that you could get 3 of the 15" 5 momme silks in the Palmo gimmick. I simply do not like to use 5 momme silk. It is too easily snagged for my liking. The 6 momme seems to hold up better for me.
I made my own gimmick from brass tubing. I can't remember the diameter offhand. Then I cut the slot and put in the ribbon. I flattened the tube some with a hammer and wrapped it with athletic tape for gripping. I then painted the whole thing with flesh paint. They are built like a tank but they should never wear out. There is no "better". It is what you like, use and perform. It is just another "choice". Remember the days when there was not "choice"? It was easier, and everyone was using the same equipment.
I still use the Bev Taylor routine, the 1st method I ever learned as a young boy. Even though I like the Ken Brooke/Tom Waterman routine, and the Pat Page version as well, I still go back to the Taylor routine using a Palmo gimmick. Being all the versions are similar, I think it would be interesting, which is the original and how the routine got from America to Europe or vice versa. Versions so far: Bev Taylor version Tom Waterman/Ken Brooke version Billy McComb version Levent version |

To the OP: I've used Billy's original handling and have purchased Levent's props and routine (which I like but as yet have not used), and there's another handling I like that's worth considering. It uses two gimmicks: a Palmo and a dye tube (the creator has very specific reasons for the difference in the gimmicks), and the switch doesn't take place in the inside breast pocket. IMO, it's a more natural (i.e., deceptive) handling than Billy's...at least for anyone who isn't Billy. In any case, it can be found on this DVD:
http://www.magicproshop.com/merlins-clas......424.html The routine is labeled "Color Changing Handkerchief" but it is, in fact, a half-dyed hank routine. |

That is weird, why doesn't Bill Abbott sell this DVD on his web site? I never heard of Merlin, except King Arthur's Merlin.

Can't really do both routines in the same show, or do some of you do just that? Dave |

I concur re: performing both routines in the same show.
As for which is stronger, it could be said that depends on the performer. Nevertheless, for my money S2E wins. |
