Apologies if someone has already posted about these tables, but I just discovered them and had to share!
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00120818 For that price, you could even leave them at the venue I bought two of them (in Canada, where the price was $29.95 - grrrrr!), and I can tell you that they are light, sturdy (I can slam my hand during a smash & stab, without any concern), and quite spacious. As for the unusual top size/design, they look kind of funky. As for packing flat, they actually come packed flat! |

What do you think about using the hole as a well?

Thanks for sharing. Just a question. Can the table top and the legs be taken apart?

Odilon, It could work. You would need to create a skirt around the table, and it might not be as effective as if the well were in a less obvious place on a square table. But that doesn't mean the idea is without merit.
A nice coincidence, is that my handheld wireless mic (I use a dual system, one headset and one handheld for anyone who joins me on stage), fits perfectly into the hole in an upright position, so it acts as a place to keep the mic, as I don't always use a mic stand on stage. James, the table comes in a flat box and can be unassembled to travel in that same configuration - provided that you are willing to take the time to use the included standard Ikea Allen key, to unscrew a few bolts each time. I don't know if the thread/bolts would stand up to constant 'attention,' but at the price of these tables, it's worth a try. For a recent gig, I merely disassembled everything, but at the end of the night, I simply removed the table-tops and left the bases on the center pole (still fit easily in my vehicle). Now, after having sung the praises of this 'find,' I must tell you that I have a new absolute favorite table - Barry Mitchell's "Dang Table" which is a Spider table style. Sturdy, large working area and super light and transportable (although the legs when collapsed won't fit in most cases and will likely require some kind of cheap canvas carrying bag. This is also, by 'industry standards,' quite cheap at only $69! Not quite the deal that the Ikea table is, but they are really nice looking on stage (I just bought and received 2 of them). http://www.barrymitchellproducts.com/sto......ng_table |

So... as a kid I bought a table top but couldn't afford a folding base. So instead I went to the hardware store and bought two threaded matching pieces of pipe, a connector to put the two together and a flange. I screwed the flange to a board and would carry the base, top, and dissembled pipes in my prop suit case and used it for many years. It was very sturdy and at the perfect height.
Recently, I bought a new table top (the old one got destroyed in a move) and a folding base from a magic store... and its given me nothing but grief. The top of the aluminum shaft crumpled when I attempted to screw down the set screw for the adapter that goes into the tables flange and would not stay put. In the end I had to super glue it. I have to be VERY careful how much weight I put on the table or, no matter how tight I've tightened it, the top slips down into the bottom. I'm about one top-slip away from saying "screw it" and going back to the hardware store.
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.

This looks like a good deal overall! I'm always looking for a light, inexpensive, portable table. Currently I use a waiter's serving tray, adding a board on top (which does not slip). But in spite of its portability, it's still in 2 pieces (more when you add the mat). Anyway, I'm going to check this out. Thanx!

Eric,
Could you possibly replace the included Ikea bolts with wing nut type set screws. If so, it could speed set up, take down. Cyberqat, I solved the same problem by investing in cymbal stands for my side tables. Easy set-up/fold-up and they'll support anything you put on 'em. Might be worth a try. 'Course they WILL set you back a bit more than the threaded pipe route. 'unc
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and that's usually good enough to make a decent living.

There is one large hand-rotating bolt holding the table-top and attached top rod, into the bottom rod and 'feet.' As a result,m the table breaks into 2 pieces rather easily.
You could probably replace the 2 table-top screws with wing-nuts, but the feet/base attachment would be trickier, as the current bolts sit flush to the floor and wing nuts would protrude. But it's really not that big a deal to carry a hex screwdriver (Ikea Swedish Army knife!). Using one, the table can be disassembled in under a minute. |

This probably does not qualify as cheap, but I use a pet grooming table. I find it to be the right size, and I like the height because I am 6'2". Might be able to find a cheap one on craigslist. |

I went by Lowes today and saw that they had a yard bag stand that was a X based folding rig to hold trash bags... only $9.
As I was about to post this, I notice the link to Barry Mitchels table above... Now I know where Barry gets his legs... Lowes! Lynn Fox |

How funny! I actually use the very same IKEA table for a quick performance surface. I love the fact that it can be raised or lowered for standing or seated routines. IKEA is a goldmine for those crafty and creative magicians.

An Ikea store opened in our area about two years ago. I still haven't made it out there, but have been planning on going this Saturday! I can't wait, I hope I find this table there
Weird is part of the job.
