What do you believe are the qualities that make a great children's entertainer?

I believe you really have to love, understand and respect children to be great at this. It helps to be naturally funny, but you can develop that. Genuine love and respect, I'm not sure, but I think that can be developed too. I think I got into this with some respect for kids, but it's really grown over the years. I also think that when a performer grows and turns from the focus being on himself and his little show to the focus being on the audience, that's when great things can really start to happen.

I second that. This is by far the most important thing to be a great children's entertainer.

Humbleness.

If you think you are the greatest entertainer in the world, children will surly let you know you are not…even if you really are. The humble understand this, the proud get frustrated and angry.

To dare to do real magic for kids and not only self working tricks. And knowing who you are in magic so you know you what you can or cannot give in magic. Just my 2 cents.

I believe that my Irish friend magic George understands what it takes to be great. An SUV full of self working magic tricks, and several jumbo backldrops.

I like how Ken summed it up in one word Smile

I will now add another word.

Being genuine.

Al and George....have it along with the rest...

Not taking yourself toooooooooo sewiously.

Be safe, well and creative...(and get a van for those new props...note to self powder my head so the reflected shine from the backdrop doesn't blind the kids.)

You got it Al. My one great regret is the current dealer habit of omitting those magic words of my youth:

Ditto Tommy J and Harris, don't take yourself too seriously and be genuine. Kids can spot a phony.

Being funny (like george, not like the patter included with most tricks)
Being able to think like a child. Know what they'd be thinking along the way.
Being able to find the character within you and projecting it strongly
Putting in the time to come up with a real act that is all tied together and not just a series of OPS.
Leaving your ego in the trunk of your SUV.
Tons of shows and being willing to find the good and bad with each show

After a show last week, a parent asked me what I do. ( I also got that when I was a full time entertainer)...When I told her, she said, "I knew you were in education". (I am a counselor at a school)

Al and others...our joy is seen on our face and especially in the eyes.

Why, how ridiculous! Anyone who thinks big props and fancy backdrops will make you "great" is living in a fantasy world! You need to spend many years learning to do incredible sleight-of-hand, and have at least 90 minutes of entertainment that you can fit into one pocket. If you can't amuse kids with a handkerchief and a strand of rope (and perhaps a scrap of paper) for at least an hour, you're a novice, run-of-the-mill hobbyist, and you should consider taking up hang gliding, it's far more rewarding.

Now, if ONLY we could hear from our erstwhile friend and opinionated poster "Jolly Roger", we could really get this thread going....

That's only to be good; to be the best entertainer in your area you need the biggest shiniest props and the most backdrops!!

Great post.

I was joking of course. A really great magician has black shiny props with gold dragons on the side.
