I had the thought of implementing the Comedy Split Deck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFeQwYK92Ww) and/or the McCombical Prediction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXEwDFaJMbY) for a group of 4th or 5th graders. I tend to lean away from card tricks when I'm dealing with kids, but I wanted to hear everyone's opinion on it before I decided.

If you brag a lot about how great you are and really get the kids against you and can act really well, I think the mccombical prediction would be great.
a little brain work necessary to make sure the kids don't yell out that they are all the same. Kids that age love being "correct". Just don't telegraph what's going to happen. Split deck? No. No. A thousand times No.

Wouldn't the act of turning the kids against me be counter productive when I don't want them to shout out that all the cards are the same?

You would do your bragging after after the selections have been made before the volunteer turns round his card.
It sounds like you could have several issues on your hands performing this for kids but if you're up for working through them and things going slightly awry the first few times you perform it then you may have an OK routine by the end of it. I perform this on occasion for adults but don't think it would fit well in my children's show. |

I use the straight and comedy split decks all the time as a demonstration of the psychic connection (or lack of one with the comedy deck) between siblings, best friends, parent and child, boyfriend and girlfriend and so on. Mothers love it as a clear demonstration of how easily they can read their child's thoughts. Split deck - A thousand times yes!

I just performed the McCombical Deck for a 4th grade class, for about the 6th year in a row. It goes over very well. It's especially funny when I'm winking to the crowd as I show the cards to be the same and then "shushing" them, too.

Yes, age 5 right into the teens. The McCombical Deck has been a staple in my show for years.
I have taken it a step further by having the card that disappears reappear on my butt (via magnet) and do a ‘look don’t see’ at the end. It gets a huge reaction.

I created a nice routine for the Jumbo McCombical deck, but I could not find a kid that really knew how to name the cards! I ended up using an adult for the role that required them to know the names of the cards.

Frank - Is that what you meant in your earlier post? Brag about being right all of the time AFTER the audience is in on the joke and both cards have been selected?

Hi Brady,
Well you kind of have to figure that out as you go I suppose but I find that I keep building up the bragging as I go, to the point of being slightly obnoxious but not overdoing it. I think Alan is giving you basically the right idea. The audience will know why you're bragging because you've set yourself up to not fail. The single spectator will not know why. But yes, that's basically what I was thinking of. I use this technique in my 3.5 of clubs script as I get closer and closer to guessing the correct card.

I use both the split deck and the McCombical Deck in my kid shows and always get a great reaction. I do play up on the fact that I'm letting them in on the secret on the Mc. Deck and do a lot of winking and clearing my throat when showing all the like cards to the audience. If you ever get a chance to use the split deck on a pair of twins it really blows them away if you take about the "twins" built in psychic link. When using adults on the split deck I always try to find the couple that has been married the longest or the shortest and use my jokes accordingly. The only thing you have to remember with the kids is like has been said before, some kids don't readily recognize cards.

Speaking of McCombical... anyone heard of the effect Jumbo Jest, or Improved Jumbo Jest?

To Al,
I've been researching exactly what you asked. Billy McComb invented both versions of Jumbo Jest and also the McCombical Deck. The McCombical Deck was first and included two deck of cards which were apparently full decks. Of course, neither of them was an ungimmicked deck of 52 different cards. One set, from which the prediction card was taken had a pair of rough and smooth cards which allowed the prediction to be switched. The other deck had 26 pairs of rough and smooth to allow the deck to be shown to the spectators as having all cards the same, but it also allowed the force of a different card which matched the (switched) prediction card. In 1979 Billy realized that it was just not necessary to carry around two full decks. Especially in Jumbo Size that's going to take up a big part of your prop case and it also weighs a lot. So, he created the original Jumbo Jest. In this case, he used two packets of cards and each of them was apparently just 6 cards. This isn't true... one of the packets contained 12 cards, and the other contained 7. But the method remained essentially the same. In 1984 Billy realized that the pile of 12 cards didn't have to use the rough and smooth method at all. His new handling was released by Supreme in England as "Improved Jumbo Jest." However, there was still a pair of roughed cards in the other packet. I bought Improved Jumbo Jest and after doing it for a time, I came up with a way to eliminate the prediction packet and just use a single prediction card which is shown in a convincing way, kept on display at all times, yet shows as a different single card which can be examined at the end. Of course, the weakness in the effect was that not once, but twice you had to use the tired method of showing a double card as one, and before it is placed where it needs to go it has to be returned to the top of the deck and then removed without showing it. Billy's improvement eliminated one of the instances of this, and my change eliminates the other. All of this will be an article I'm working on for MUM magazine and will probably appear in the December 2010 or January 2011 issue. My thanks to Byron Walker who found, in his library the instructions for the original Jumbo Jest which I didn't have and which allowed me to piece together the puzzle. I have the original instructions for Improved Jumbo Jest, still. It's ironic that some dealers today still sell the original McCombical Deck when Billy's improvements are significant. (Maybe mine is, too.) Dennis Loomis

This is not my idea --- it originated elsewhere and may be in a related post --- but I have come to favor the idea of using two spectators, generally a guy and a gal. After she 'chooses' which pack to use, I place the appropriate pack aside "for the main event, The Selection." "But first, The Prediction," using the other stack. I show the cards to everyone except the lady who will hold the prediction card. For the fellow, who is to stop action at the matching selection, I ask if he's sure... wants to change his mind... to be sure he feels he had a free choice, etc.; then hand him his card.
After the reveal, Magician in Trouble, I turn to the lady, who gets to "save the day." This seems to play well, although I'm looking for a way to improve the experience for the two spectators. It's fun for the audience, but the gal has done little more than stand there, hold a card, and played a bit part, without really understanding what happened. Her card matches his, but there's little wonder for either of them. Any ideas? |
