Magic Folks,
I am intrigued by the ring in walnut, having seen it performed on Letterman, seeing John's tape, and reading all the comments offered here at the Café. The way I want to do it will require that I give the lemon to a spectator to hold while the spectator is seated in the audience and I am up on stage. My question: Is the lemon fixed in such a way (with egg inside) that a spectator could hold the lemon (and maybe even examine it) and not suspect it had been tampered with? Common sense says "no," but I have found that the world of magic is filled with clever people who might be able to devise a way to do something with a lemon and an egg (and a walnut) that defies common sense. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Zipper |

This is great.... I've just watch the DVD, but walnut it's not common in my country..... so I change the walnut with a small plastic ball, it works, but much better using walnut....

Zipper, FYI, you should not let the audience handle the lemon.
Miraclemakers, I did the same thing; I use a plastic container instead of a walnut to house the ring. The great part of using this holder is that it is from a chocolate egg candy called a "KinderEgg", and so I joke that their ring is in the egg, much like the prize in a "KinderEgg" . . .
It would really be quite tragic

Boy Wonder,
Thanks for the FYI on the lemon. Much appreciated. I guess I'll stick with Ring in the Kiwi from Cloutier's tape. Best, Zipper |

I had never heard of "Kinder Eggs" but Wikipedia has an article:

Perfect link, Jeff! Now everyone can know the plastic container that comes in a Kinder Egg / Kinder Surprise. It is what I use. Call me lazy, but I can't bother with the walnut as they are hard to get, and harder to "prepare". Everyone here in Toronto Canada knows what they are, so it works for me! Otherwise, this is an awesome effect!
P.S. Miraclemakers, glad to share . . . ;-)

I love this effect, yet for me it has one issue (though maybe it's just magician's thinking on my part, or the fact that I've seen this performed before.) Once the lemon is cut open and we see the egg, for me it's a natural progression that the walnut will be in the egg and the ring will be in the walnut...so as soon as the egg is visible, I feel like the ending becomes obvious, even though the trick isn't over.
I think it's a beautiful piece and would love to work on it myself, and it is certainly magical. I just wonder if anyone ever had similar thoughts?

Yes Andrew, I think you're right, it is anti-climatic(is that a word?). However because of the impossibilty of the ring in the walnut it still has a good effect on the audience.
Magic is a vanishing art.

That's what I figured...I guess I'm just more of a "surprise ending" kind of guy on the whole.
I believe it's 'anticlimactic,' yes

Is it possible that the audience does realize the ending, and anticpate it, and as it comes, they become more and more puzzled as to how it could be, and when the ring is finally in there, there's a big "no way" feeling that waves over them? On the way they could be thinking, is the ring in there? not in there? Hmmm? Perhaps, even if it is not a complete surprise, the climatic ring reveal is a release of tension and a natural apllause cue? That's the way it works with the original with the canary instead of the ring. After all, It was a showstopper for the great Richiardi.

I like the way you put that - a "release of tension." That's a nice way of looking at it!

I have performed a good dozen times and the prep does get easier. One spectator may have seem the 'load' of the walnut at the end. I personally need to make the load of a bill(ring is out for me because of it's possible peril) so it is more seamless. My current solution is to do it in multiple steps as I go to the bag.

I saw Paul Daniels perform the Lemon, Egg, Walnut in England back around 1980-1981, It was his signature closing number and no matter how much others try to justify the creation of this particular trick, in my eyes and the eyes of England and the rest of Europe, it's Paul Daniel's creation. All the working Pro's know this. It's the wanna-be's that are in denial.
This reminds me of the American rip-off of Harbin's Zig-Zag illusion. Gerry |

Everyone posting ideas of using other items instead of the Walnut, Egg, and Lemon, totally miss the point and mystery of using the real items. If you are using a product that everyone knows can be opened, then of course they know it was put in the container in some way. Thus they have left an open thought as to a logical solution to accomplish the trick.
Natural grown and created items are known by everyone, there is no way to place something inside, much less remove the contents without destroying the item. It is the performers "who go the extra mile, will reap the rewards" for their efforts. Doing it the easy or lazy way, is not as great. Everyone knows you cannot fool Mother Nature!! |

Does anyone use alternatives for this or similar tricks using walnuts?
I often perform for younger kids and schools and have been worried about performing this with walnuts due to the allergies that can be present. I was thinking of using a snack sized candy bag (Fun sized milkyway bar), but just wanted to see what others thought. Thanks!

Children today are allergic to just about everything, including, fruit, milk, candy, chips, you name it. My advice is to just stay clear of any that can be eaten, these days. If you do, always make sure you check with the parents before handing out anything that can be consumed. Their are a number of tricks that have coins, rings, cards, etc., that end up in a sealed bag. Just do some searching and you should find them. |
