I have looked into getting a dove and using it in my show. I have searched the topic here at the Café and came to find out that having a lot of doves in the home can be harmful. Here is my question I am only wanting to use one dove would one dove still be to harmful to have in the house? I have centeral heat and air with a filter if that helps any at all. Any opinion would be great and thanks in advance.

Hey Redneck...LOL. just 2 or a pair wouldnt be bad, keeping them in another room is the way to go, just don't have them in a bedroom where you would be breathing in the dander all night. I have an air filter or purifier in the back room with them. a lot of the dander goes into those filters. with just a pair, I really don't think it would be an issue. I even have asthma, and have the cockatoo (Mullochin) that gives off tons of white dander, along with my eight flyers in the same room. The air filter pulls in a lot of that dander, and don't seem to notice much on any furniture> hope this helps.

Chris is correct. As long as you are not breathing in the dander, there will be no problem. At one time, I had 31 birds in an aviary in my basement. My wife has asthma and couldn't go into the basement for anything but was fine in the rest of the house. When we rehearsed, I had to bring the birds upstairs and out into our garage.
Besides health issues, that darned dander gets all over everything. The more doves you have, the greater the volume of dander and onces it settles, it's next to impossible to clean up.

Make sure to give the bird or birds a bath or shower every week. Put a pan of water in the cage to have them bath themselves or put is in the shower on light water spay. Helps to cut done on the dander.
My experience was I made the mistake of having the birds in the living room, and I sat under the cage. Got showered with dander and before long took a trip to the hospital, couldn't breath. Thought I was going to die, only got a large emergency hospital bill. Almost died again when I seen the hospital bill. Learned a lesson the hard way! |

Thanks for all of the help. I am going to take the plunge and get one dove and give it a try. I have called the pet stores around my area, and they do not carry doves. Can anyone recommend an online source?

Redneck...... give me a PM, let us know what state you are in, and we may be able to find a local breeder. Contact a farmer's co-op, feed store, etc., and someone will have some leads for you. May be able to go to a dove breeder's directory and find a local breeder. Give me a shout. Look under wedding planners, some of these folks do dove releases. May have a contact from there. Get creative and start asking all kinds of folks that you may think is associated with doves somehow... Hope this helps... If you can try to, get a pair of doves.... don't want that little guy lonely. Just as easy to take care of two as it is one... good luck.

One other thing. I can't stress enough the importance of not getting doves from a pet store. There have been several topics about this in recent years. You never know what you are getting, and the pet stores really don't care about the doves, their health or their well being. Take Chris's advice on locating doves.

Be careful about getting doves from wedding planners or their contacts. If they're actually using ringnecks, I highly doubt they care about the dove's health or safety any more than a pet store. A good "dove" releaser will actually be using homing pigeons, as ringnecks won't return home and will most likely die in the wild.

Just see if the wedding planners know of a breeder of the white java doves. Use all avenues and weed them out as you go.

Thanks for all of the help I will check into wedding planners and my local co-op. I thought their might have been a breeder online that magician used that was a good source. I am located in TN.

If you have read the post in this section, postage regulations and charges have sky rocketed. Better for you to find them locally as postage is 3 or 4 times the cost of the bird.
