I now have the Mandolin cards. They are VERY nice. They feel very much like the Richard Turner decks. They faro out of the box easily.

The back design is close enough to the Rider backs to be a non-concern. Besides, the card box says "BICYCLE" which, in and of itself, should take off a lot of heat.

I also have the Phoenix cards. They, too, are very nice. However, they feel a little thinner or softer. This is OK. They handle very nice. It's too bad they didn't come packaged as "Phoenix Back" Bicycle cards.

Since the Mandolin deck has the original Ace of Spades and joker, does that mean the Ace of Spades and joker can't be gaffed?

I don't think they can. We can customize any card or back design except the Ace of Spades and the Joker. That's what I read so far.

No, you can customize the Ace and the Joker for the Mandolins. The Ace and Joker have 809 on them, which, I guess makes them different. Frankly, I don't think it makes them look different enough for the USPCC to think it's okay but I'm not going to argue it. Smile

The Mandolins are very nice, BTW. Definitely better stock than 808s.

Yesterday when I've bought The Card Classics of Ken Krenzel by Harry Lorayne (great book!) I've also received a deck of mandolins.
The stock feels good but I really don't like the backs.
I know it's a subtle change and maybe I'm grumpy but I just don't like them.
The same for the Phoenix Deck (with all respect Cardshark!) I really don't like the back and the jokers.

Maybe I'm thinking to simple but I really don't understand the fuzz at USPCC.
It's all about copyright wich is formality..now we are forced to use something else (and in my opninion completely different)
I will stick to the old 808 Rider Back because I'm more interested in sleight of hand and most of the gaff cards wich I use I can make them myself..

I have not had a problem getting gaff cards on regular 808 Rider Back stock, and I don't think I will have a problem in the future.
A lot of that junk was put out to sell Mandolin's. Don't believe everything they tell you. It makes me mad that they market something in this manner.

Just got a deck of Mandolin's. They're wonderful. MUCH better quality than the 808's. They Faro great right out of the box and a have nice feel to them.

'Most' sites have Rider Back's for just under $3.00. Penguin has Mandolin's for 2.25 ( and then you get the return discounts/free shipping ).

I'm sold on them.

I have three decks of Mandolins. Got them over a month ago. Only used one so far for practicing and it's still in great shape. Been using it ever day.

I personally think the backs looks great. In fact, with the exceptions of the feathers in the corners, they look just like Rider backs. Well, at a glance they do.

I really like the way the Mandolins handle. If you are a performer who doesn't do tricks which destroy cards, and you want a normal looking deck that will hold up over many performances, you should consider getting a deck or two.

My mandolin ID just arrived.

I'm not such a sophisticated card worker that I can really discern the differences, but they do "feel" pretty high quality.

I don't know if it's just me or this deck feels different than the 808. Good for Faro straight out of the box.

However, there's something different with the seals. I got two decks, blue and red. The blue one has two seals instead of one. I actually got two blue decks since my first one is a defect. The replacement deck also has two seals.

The red one has one seal only, I don't know if this is intentional or a mishap in packaging?

I cannot speak to the issue of multiple seals, but as previously mentioned, the Mandolins are traditionally cut (a la Richard Turner) and therefore they have edge sensations and faro properties not present in “out of the box” 808’s.

I don't even know the difference between the cut they use now and traditional cut. Can someone kindly explain it to me?

It's not only the cut I think, it's just feel different.

From Mr. Turner himself:

Traditionally cut cards are done in such a manner that the cutting blade goes through the face of paper stock and comes out the back. This method of cutting puts the sharp edge on the back of the card and the rounded edge on the face. Traditional card cutting was the norm in the past, but the process was changed about fifteen years ago.

"As the casinos persist, I chose the traditional cut to ensure that card men and magicians could easily interlace the cards which produce crisp, clean shuffles, especially with some of the more intricate shuffling techniques. No professional likes to practice or perform with a deck that binds up. If you want to know if your cards are traditionally cut, use this simple test: shuffle the cards face down, and then turn them face up and shuffle them again. If they shuffle better when the cards are face up, you most likely don't have a traditionally cut deck of cards."

Thanks. I never really pay attention to feel when I shuffle them face up or face down. I will try it tonite and feel the difference.

I think ONE of the main reasons the new Mandolin decks came out is so that we could have full decks of Twilight Angel refills. I put in a lot of requests for this.
I believe Paul could not get the USPCC to make them on 808's. So they designed the 809's just for this.
Thanks to Paul and his team for making this happen.

I have some Mandolin cards and I have to say I like them. I am changing over from regular Bikes to these. They handle great and look normal. Plus the Twilight Angel Deck is a huge plus.

I finally got my order of 809's and they seem to be just fine. I'll use them in my next walk around gig so I can repeat TA all night long.
