Hello Everyone!
So I have written a new show surrounding rural agriculture and family farms, my only issue is name! I was going for Agri-Kidabra, after buying some abra-kid-abra convention stuff and thought it would be good. A friend then pointed out a show already named agricadabra. So is Agri-Kid-Abra too close to agricadabra? I checked with a local business registration office and neither name is a registered business in North American, and neither are trademarked. Looking for advice! What names would you suggest. Daniel Steep |

Personally I don't like the name, regardless if it is close to another name or not. It is not memorable to me. You want a Name that sticks in your head so your target audience can remember who you are. For example Captain kangaroo, that sticks in your head. The Magic Barnyard or something along those lines who be a better fit. Just my two cents

I'm bothered by one thing. You seem to be ready to register a name if not already and then, I assume, will claim ownership. Most magicians don't feel the need. If you want to call this agra-kid-abra and no one in your area is using it then use it but as a courtesy let anyone else using it know. Not a real original name, same as magic barnyard, the magic barn, the magical barn, stuff like that. Is this a touring show? Will you be competing with the urban (non rural) agriculturally oriented magicians? I'm getting a serious very young magician vibe here. Good for you for writing a show though....I actually like the name agra kid abra. Clearly birthday kids are not going to ask parents "I want that magician with the corn!" so it must be for fairs or something and the name kind of says it all. I mean, what else is there? Ruralfamilyfarmician? |

Santa -
I was actually pointed out by a friend that someone was performing under a similar name, but we are in different countries, I wanted to ask everyones opinion. No I would not claim the name as my own nor would I trade mark it. Thanks Tom! |

There are many companies in different towns with the same name that are not related I say go for it as long as your shows don't overlap. I did look up the agricadabra schedule and that dude has nothing going on it seems. I say go for AgriKidAbra is it is kid oriented and not worry about it.

Will next year's show be based on agriculture? If not, you will need a new name and new brochures/posters and if you keep changing your name how will past clients find/remember you? Brad Matchett calls his show Agricadabra (www.agricadabra.com) and changes the show but always keeps it AG centered. Every year it's the same name in the schedule so parents & kids remember it and know who it is they want to go see at the fair.
When I was focused on daycares/libraries, the promo material was always "Magic with Wes" and then a short blurb to describe the current show. wes holly |

Thanks Wes!
The show will be Ag based correct, and I will continue to offer that show for a very long time! Thanks for the advice! Daniel |

Wes, I'm glad you use the word 'with' rather than 'of'. I use Magic With Mike because, after much thought, I felt it was more friendly and less ego driven.
I still want to know what critter goes maa! I'm thinking a goat. |

"The Silly Scarecrow", "The Freaky Farmer", "Farmer Fantastic". "Combine" these ideas (pun intended) to arrive at: "Flashy Farmer Fantastic presents Farmagination", etc... Potty |

Thanks Doug!
AniMagic actually came up but the only reason I didn't was because the show focus' on animals, crops, agricultural equipment, etc. Daniel |

RE: Name registration: "Most magicians don't feel the need" that's because you have to be willing to take action (legal) against those using it! And internatonal lawsuits can be very expensive. I actually paid for a name ("ShaZzam!") used by John Daniel and then Lee Edwards, and now me. Several magical authorities agree with the lineage and ownership. (Abb Dickson, Mike Cavenay, Rick Walker etc.) But for the one or two who have "revised" the spelling etc. it would not be worth it for me to take the legal action to get them to stop.
You would have thought within the magic fraternity some folks could be alittle more original. In Canada the use, and ownership of a name rights, can be wide, ie. you may have "aquired" rights to a name, within your industry. In otherwards even without registration I could take legal action against another show using the same name locally, however, a furniture shop starting to use the name locally could use it without fear. That being said, if I was to start marketing the show internationally, and products, then I would proceed with protection of the name. I would certainly try to come up with an original name for your show, and make it yours. Blair
