Without going into detail, you are way-out of your league. Unless you have been properly trained in this area, the most you can do is report her to the appropriate agency which deals with these types of persons.

There may be underlying issues you are not aware of and you could do further damage by questioning her.

Now if she brings up the issue to you, without you probing, then she is asking for help and immediate get her to the right people ASAP.

I do know what I am talking about here.

Thanks, Dennis.

It seems to be the consensus that I should just keep my mouth shut.

That's what I'll do.

I truly appreciate the advice. Thanks to all of you.

I agree with Dennis, you are way out of your league saying anything at all.

The 'agency that deals with these types of persons'? They have those types of agencies?

I would consult a colleague in the the Psychology Department or perhaps ring up The Student Health Center for advice. What if she dies man? You'll feel terrible forever.

Douglas,

In the first post, it's says,"The most obvious (though perhaps not only) explanation is that she is anorexic."

She could have a variety of illnesses and she is already dying! Anorexic may not be the correct one. "Would you ever ask a woman with an extended belly, how many months is she pregnant?" Asking the wrong question may not be the best choice.

There are a lot of solid reasons not to probe. By-no-means, does this mean do nothing. One should seek out the proper help and find out the next step if they don't know.

I'm sure there are the appropriate counselors, near by, within the school system who has the master list of the right agency for this situation. Quite possible the school nursing staff is already familiar with the situation. One can ask them about the situation without deviling into another personal medical history.

Most schools who are unionized have Employee Assistant Programs. This does not mean only employees can seek their advice. It their job, and master's degrees which give them (EAP) the ability to deal with these situations.

In the blue section of the Yellow Phone Book, there are many, many help agencies, and they accept all calls. One can find out the right path, if one wants to address the issue properly.

The problem is, people get so obsessed with getting skinny that they do it in unhealthy ways that typically sprout from very dangerous methods... Starvation, liquid diets, bulimia, etc. I myself have been the victim of an angry, frustrated self image and ended up starving myself for over a week until my friends lovingly tried to stop me. Just today, in fact, I saw a dangerously thin girl... It's just as unattractive as morbid obesity, and hopefully these dangerously thin people eventually realize this and help themselves.

Dennis I appreciate all your input in this thread. But just to repeat and clarify, there is no school nurse. This young woman is a first-year student in a university with 30,000 students. It's easy to live under the radar. One can never assume that someone else has already done something to intervene.

But I agree that it's not my job to do so.

The question is whether it is anybody else's job. Perhaps only her family or intimate friends.

You would be better off talking to her parents. If she is a first year student she is probibly a minor.

If it were me, I'd contact the District Nursing Assoc. or even an eating disorder group for someone professional/knowledgeable to visit the girl at home. If it's done anonymously they can present it as 'people worried about your appearance" or something similar.

I'm sure they're used to being told to bugger off by anorexics, but at least a helping hand would have been offered.

Sad situation.

I worked with a girl who had the opposite of anorexia. She looked in the mirror and saw a slender hard bellied body and she wasn't. She would enter bikini contest and be laughed at but she didn't realize it was at her. It was very bizarre but just like the ones who see fat in the mirror when they are not.
