Houdini was famous for doing the Needles trick, not the Razor Blades. I don't know if he invented the Needles himself or gotten from someone else. I have not read all the books on Houdini's life, there are a lot of published works on him by many different authors, many have some of his props and escape hardware.

Im bumpinh up this old thread because I am curious if there are any newer versions out that are safer / cheaper to obtain?

I am particularly looking for multiple blades put into the mouth and pulled out on the string (like 5 or more), they can go in 1 at a time, or all at once, as long as in the beginning I can show each seperatly.

I want to take 0% chance of swallowing a REAL SHARP blade. I understand irritation or things of that sort. But not a method where a real blade comes anywhere near my mouth.

Any suggestions?

You are better off just creating your own version to get what you want. However, look into the Dayton version. It's fairly clever and only uses one set of blades.

I think it was Jay Marshall who told me this anecdote about HOUDINI and the needle trick...

I'm not sure of DETAILS anymore, but it seems there was a big show in NYC put on by the LAMBS CLUB. Most of the "big names" of vaudeville, etc. were there, either performing, or in the audience.

HOUDINI was doing the NEEDLES, and invited GROUCHO MARX on stage to be a "committee of one" to observe up close, the trick. HOUDINI opening his mouth wide, invited GROUCHO to "inspect". When GROUCH had done so, HOUDINI asked: "What do you see?" GROUCH replied: "PYORRHEA!" According to Jay, the laugh was an absolute SHOW STOP! Jay didn't say if HOUDINI ever forgave GROUCHO!!!

Dick - Groucho recounted that story in his Carnegie Hall concert that was released on LP as "An Evening With Groucho" - about 1975. A great story! Groucho said Houdini did not recognize him because he was not wearing his stage mustache.
