I would love to hear your thoughts on the best mentalism effect with the following conditions:
1) Suitable to perform to a stranger on the street 2) No gimmicks 3) If use cards--the spectator must be able to shuffle and examine deck 4) Must be simple and straight forward 5) ust work 100% of the time 6) No sleight of hand I like Anate but it is not 100%. Daniel Madison's advocate can accomplish much of this but uses a gimmick. Look forward to your comments |

What about blindsight by Devin Knight? I think that meets the criteria.

Woodfield has a post about using Richard Osterlind's "Inside the Fold". I have used a variation of the effect he describes over a scores of times in walk around, going up to perfect strangers and blowing them away. It would suit your requirements perfectly.

Take a Hypnosis Course, Stage and Therapy.
Then get Anthony Jacquin's "Reality Is Plastic" and/or "The Manchurian Approach". Then you're ready whenever and wherever. Well, most of the time. Imho...

If I think of anything else I'll post it. Repeatable rope is a magic not mental effect. |

Oops, the effect I suggested does use a gimmick. Sorry.

I got it. Criss Cross force. Scratch that, needs a peek. (Sleight).

Why does it seem like "Mentalists" shy away from sleight of hand? Heck, even magicians these days seem to want to stay away from it. I find it amusing to see effects with "No Sleight of Hand Required" becoming more and more popular and a major selling point. Kind of sad, really.

In other words, you're looking for perfect mentalism that you don't have to practice for?

I think the opposite is true here. More practice is needed this way.
I think this is actually more difficult than prop based performance. You MUST rely on your presentational and communication skills fully, nothing to fall back on, well almost...

My suggestions would be...
1. use billets switch or simple center tear... the presentation is up to you. 2. cold reading. 3. if you will use cards, a simple force (im suggesting classic but you mentioned no sleight) then build up the revelation. 4. if you want something stronger, use diplopia 5. PATEO Force |

If I had unlimited time I suppose gimmicks, sleight of hand, etc would not be an issue. Let me be clear, I have learned that presentation is the critical element and I do practice that element quite a bit. I believe if I spent more time on sleight of hand, my presentation would suffer since I have a full time job, children, etc. |

Why these conditions? I am with Rob. I think sleight of hand is fine, as long as it is structured in a way that is fair and effective.
By the way. I feel there are no "best effects", only best presentations. Your context and your subtext are all that matters. While I agree with most of the comments above, the joy of studying is finding your own "bests" by determining this for yourself. You mention Dee Christopher and Daniel Madison (both of whom are fine contemporaries), but there are tons of great material hidden (in plain sight) in older texts. "Old is the new new". For instance, the originial "Par-Optic Vision" meets all the criteria there. It is simple, effective and can be used in any setting with a borrowed deck. These types of effect read a little "flat" on the page, but when performed glow. This is much of mentalism. Cheers, Sean |

Richard Osterlind's watch routine fits the conditions. If the original poster considers anything in that routine could be considered a sleight, then he shouldn't perform it.
I feel time should be devoted to both method and presentation. If that means learning sleights or investigating a few gimmicks, so be it. Spend a few years learning and practicing instead of looking for instant gratification. Since I'm nice, though, I'll give away my favorite card effect from my childhood. It's "A Card to be Thought About" by Annemann. The way I perform it requires a pass, but a double-undercut would suffice. And if a double undercut is considered a sleight, then I give up.
