Over the years, Robert Heinlein had many stories published in Boys' Life magazine (a magazine for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts). However, the one that stands out most in my memory is the comic serialization of his novel "Between Planets", which ran from April 1978 to September 1979.
Recently, Google Books has made these issues available for free, as part of their Boys' Life archive. So, here's the links to the full story: Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Chapter 17 Chapter 18 |

Wow. It took me three pages to remember this story. In the book, it was a war between Earth and the colony on Venus. And there was certainly no "strange glow" to the ring, it was just a plastic ring with an "H" on it. (Although it did turn out to be a very important Macguffin.)
And this was 1978? Did someone say; "Forget 30 years of science fiction, I'm gonna draw them like 'Flash Gordon!'"?
