Gestalt being used here to refer to the over-all picture perceived by an auduience, the "general impression." This usage actually derives from the world of art (Der Heilige Deutsche Kunst) rather than psychology, in particular, the cognitive processing of atonal music, neither here nor there. My point is the larger detail of method brings with many small details, which combine to create an overall impression. In a routine, does the small detail of a billet's never leaving the spectator's hand (suggesting a switch and read methodology rather than a center tear or peek) create a better picture than the billet being shredded, eliminating any possibility of later tampering (as in a center tear). The overall impression left in the mind of the spectator, the single image stamped in the perceptions of the audience will be different in each case. Part of routining is taking such differences into account.

Personally, I use index cards for my tear. Ran Pink's "Think Pink" is an EXCELLENT tear designed for index cards. It's what I use.
