Just watched Last Comic Standing on line, and saw our fellow MC member Tom Crowl and Dangerous Dudley. He didn't move on to the showcase, but the judges said they liked him, just not for this show. Congrats to Tom for auditioning and having the b*lls to go to New York and perform. Way to go Tom!

Go to NBC.com . He's in the second episode. It aired this past Monday night. It was shot at Gotham Comedy Club. They showed a montage of other vents, but those must be from other cities, because the background was The Improv and I think Hilarities...

Some of the other vents had quick clips, but Tom had the most screen time. The one judge ended the segment by saying, "I like his duck", and then Dudley makes a crack as they are walking off the stage, that the same judge hears..it's a funny moment..
I think Tom appears about half way through the hour long show...

Thanks. My five seconds of fame. Nerves kicked in and it was not exactly my best work - but the judges were kind. There was more to Dudley's crack than they showed, but keep in mind, they can edit video to make you look any way they want.

The vents aired in that segment auditioned in L.A. and NY. They opened with Kenny Warren. I apologize I do not remember the names of the others - although I have seen some of them on Youtube.

Before auditioning, I talked with other vents that were on past season. I had no delusions that I would go through. My goal was to get a national TV credit - and luckily I did.

Congratulations Tom. As Ken said it takes a lot of guts go on this sort of show. It sounds like you had thought it through and knew exactly what you wanted out of it. I hope your tv credit leads to lots of work for you.

I finally saw the episode. I actually watched a couple of episodes because I was late on the uptake here and was confused about which episode you were on. It is clearly a stand-up's show, and they have no real interest in anything else. So knowing that when you went in was good. I also think the TV credit is gold, even though they gave you the completely predictable 'hook'. They at least offered a little compliment and I'm sure the experience was interesting. I'd do it. To be honest though, despite my grousing elsewhere about stand-ups in general, I do like stand-up. I've done a little myself, so I actually enjoyed the episodes I watched and probably will start watching the show again. I had a friend on the show a few years back who made it to the finals. Her name is Kristin Key. I was there the first time she ever got on stage for an open mic. I'd been doing it for a few weeks when she showed up, and I was starting to improve, but she absolutely blew us all away. Some people are naturals. This was about 12 or 15 years ago and she's doing ok now, but it's a lot of work to get to be a headliner in that business, even if you have some talent. There's just so much competition and the way it works is so... narrow really. There aren't that many venues where stand-up works so you have to build your act at comedy clubs, so you have to travel a lot and work cheap as a 'middler' for a while. It's tough. I remember all the wannabe comics who were hanging around the club back then, they'd travel a couple of hundred miles for a hundred dollar gig at some dive. I was staying in town doing birthdays. I'm a variety artist and I can do birthdays. Can you imagine trying to do pure stand-up at a birthday party? And I was making more and working much more consistently. Variety is just so much better despite the dissing it gets from comics.

Would one of you kindly post a link to Tom's episode? I'd much appreciate it.

I would certainly echo David's comments about comedy clubs, my primary venue. Stand-up is, I think, harder than vent from the perspective that it's just the comic and the audience. (We at least have our puppets and our novelty.) It's a very hard life for comics. I've performed with a number of stand-ups whom I consider to be as good as almost anyone we see on TV, and they are struggling to keep their heads above water.

I have performed a couple of times on the same bill as Mike DeStefano, the NY comic who was featured fairly prominently in the first episode, and he is great. He had a recent 1/2 hour special on Comedy Central, and I was fascinated to see how the same material plays so much better in person than on TV.

At any rate, many congratulations to you, Tom. But if you're ever in my town again and don't let me know about it...well, we New Yawkas have our ways.
