Hi, all -
Since you've been so terrific with my first round of questions about our "Cinderella" production, I hope you can assist us with two other subjects. Here's the first: Silk Flowers. We have a scene in which the Fairy Godmother arrives at Cinderella's house to cheer her up and get her ready to go to the ball. Before the "big" magic begins (pumpkins, coaches, etc.), FGM does a few little tricks to warm up. The first: she makes a vase on the mantle bloom with flowers, which then spread across the mantle. So I'm looking for three groups of silk flowers: one to appear in the vase, about 18-24" in diameter; and two 4' long strands/garlands to appear on the mantle, left and right of the vase. All of these should be rigged to appear from behind the mantle set, so the actors don't have to go near them. We can make holes in the mantle as needed. The flowers should be bright and colorful, but fairly realistic looking. Does anyone have good recommendations for sources on these? Because this is just a 2-week production, I'd love to find a rental for these, but purchasing is a fallback. Richard Hughes... are you there? Thanks again to the group for your great support! Cheers, Adam |

If you can find silk flowers of the type you want to appear, you'll find instructions for converting them into Realistic Spring Flowers in my "Flower Power" e-Book in The Wizards' Journal #14. Pulling a monofilament fish line can make them open one after another or all at once (or any combination of the two).
It might be "cute" to have her drop some broom straws or twigs into the vase first, before making the main flowers burst into bloom, or make the blooms in the vase slowly appear one at a time using the monofilament fish line pull cord method. Then using the same method, the flowers in the garland begin appearing one by one from the center outward, but perhaps the ones on the end get "stuck" and need an extra "nudge" from the magic wand.
