I have recently had the experience of gaining strong rapport with someone, and pulling everything I could think of over on him. I did the most stupid card effect ever. I asked him to freely cut off a packet of cards and place it so that he stood between the packets. I then asked him to close his eyes and visualize the card, had him open his eyes and take off the top card. I had just dropped another on top, yet he was still amazed as I read his mind.
I them went into so many psychological forces I almost scared myself, 37 force, a beautiful real 1 in 50 "force" (I was off by two, I was betting on 47, he said 45), the 1 in 10 seven force, a 1 in 100 free 12 force (of by one), billet peeks, forcing predicted objects just by pushig them forward a little, book tests, and dozens of other things in under 45 minutes. I don't even think he took it all in. And it wasn't like the invisible prediction with an out if it messes up, it was like "Think of a number between 1 and 50. Are you thinking of 47?" Anyways with all that said, my question is, how do _you_ gain rapport with someone? What kind of tone do you take on it, what effects do you start with? Thanks. |

Depends on the type of person they are. You need to go with the flow so to speak. Match their tone of voice, speed of talking etc. The subconscious likes someone like them. Mirror or pace them in as many ways as possible and then lead them. Breating rate is also a good mirror.

Rapport should start before you even begin your first effect. There are many books written on the subject as well. I don't have time to really get into the thread as my band is waiting but I have learned a lot on the subject through various hypnosis books and what not. I'm sure there is a lot to be discussed here as I personally have put just as much time into learning about creating rapport as I have in some of my effects.

Rapport has many nuances on how to develop and more importantly how to MAINTAIN it, MF.
A great book to get started with learning about rapport would be "How to Win Friends and Influence people" hope this helps, isid0re |

Ahhh...so you are looking for ways to open people.
Firstly, do you have an elevator pitch? that is an 11 second value statement or pitch about what you do. something that will generate some interest in what you do. If you don't have this than how can you expect someone to be interested or more importantly for your wants to have someone ask you for an demonstration? If you do have this, then guide the conversation. Or if you are merely having a conversation with someone and don't want to do the elevator pitch than knowing what your abilities are and their limitations guide the conversation and link it to one of your abilities and phrase it in a way that leads to either them asking for an example or your need to show an example to explain your point. hope this helps, isid0re |

Hello,
If you are sincerely interested in the concept of Rapport and even using Rapport itself as an effect or an enhancement to other effect, then I would suggest you check out "Random Acts of Kindness" by Jerome Finley; as well as my manuscripts "Heavily Haunted: Second Edition" and "Hand Bluffs Plus More Stuff". I would also suggest "Building Blocks" by Luke Jermay and "Garden of the Strange" by Caleb Strange. For more generalized rapport that is not magic-specific I would suggest the books "Instant Rapport" and Richard Bandler's "Guide to Trance-Formations" and the book "Conversations with Richard Bandler". Sincerely, Dale A. Hildebrandt |

Thanks to the both of you. Will look into the book by Caleb Strange, and thanks Is0dore, I think I didn't correctly depict my abilities before demonstrating them.
