Hi All!
Anyone have ideas for amazing, yet very easy to learn and perform, tricks to teach at workshops I'm doing at a summer camp? The groups are from age 6 to age 10. THANKS! Simcha |

I don't have a lot of experience, but I think 6 will be a challenge. I'm about to leave for the third day of a week long summer camp for ages 9-13, it's been great but the 9 year olds have definitely needed a bit more work.
I have a general outline like this: Day 1: body magic & impromptu finger warmups, hand scam, take off finger and thumb, pen behind the ear/coin vanish Day 2: cards jumping rubber bands (carried over from day 1) overhand shuffle, poker player's picnic, key card, hindu shuffle force Day 3: coins paddle move (as an extra with an emphasis on all the possibilities), french drop, clip vanish, pull a coin from the ear, sponge balls. I want to emphasize that what they can do with coins they can do with any other small object Day 4: juggling & balloon animals (may change to juggling and mentalism) crayon mind reading, fortune telling fish, pateo force Day 5: rope magic & performance for parents fastest knot in the west, professors nightmare, rope escape or rope through body (probably won't be time for those) I've also been trying to cover basic theory: practice, don't tell, make it fun, don't make of fun of or "trick" people, the ham sandwich theory.

The DVDs on this website should be of help to you:
http://www.magictricksareforkids.com/ They are also available at many magic dealers. Look for "Magic Tricks R 4 Kids" DVDs. Eddy Wade also sells a magic camp in a box product: http://www.wademagicproducts.com/MagicCamp.html And a magic workshop in a box product: http://www.wademagicproducts.com/MagicWorkshop.html Jack Turk did a recent interview with Eddy on subject of magic camps and workshops. If you are on Jack's email list, you would have had the opportunity to listen in and hear ideas, as well as Jack & Eddy offered these products at special prices. Sorry, but I don't have a link to a call replay. - Donald P.S. There are several previous threads on this topic. Don't forget to do a search.

Here's some tricks I teach at Magic Camp for 1st through 6th graders:
Floating Wand Psychic Crayons Coin Slider Ball & Vase Ring & Spring puzzle Invisible Ball and Bag Imp Bottle Chinese Mystery Vase Two Card Monte (different presentations for different ages) Clip Card Force a Card (and a variety of revelation methods) Read Your Mind (a three out version and a torn index card version) Paddle effect Fortune Telling Fish Jumping Rubber Band Cut and Restored (string in straw version) Linking Paper Clips Mr. Zippy (version of James Munton's Mr. Bagge`) Appearing knot on rope Silly Balloon in Bag Key Card Upside Down card location Flat Top/Round Top card rick Rubber pencil 1089 force I typically break kids up into 1st through 3rd grade, then 4th through 6th grade and don't always teach all of the tricks to each group. Generally I don't do too many card tricks for the younger kids, although some times I do and it works well. Kinda depends on the group. Mr. Zippy and the Invisible Ball in Bag trick are always a big hit with both groups. I always open each class with a couple of tricks. One a well thought out, funny bit with comedy and audience participation...another one which is a simple trick with (virtually) no plot, just a trick. I try to impress on them the importance of developing a story to go along with the effect to make it more entertaining. After seeing an interesting and entertaining bit and then a less than entertaining "trick", they seem to get it. It's always fun to see the kids come up with stories to accompany their performances. During the teaching I give them some various ideas for stories and encourage their creativity. At the end of camp, we do a show where the kids actually perform a single effect for family, friends and camp staff and it's always cool to see what they come up with. It's also cool to see some of the shy kids beam with pride after performing in front of others. Hope this helps! |

James Munton has a great DVD on teaching magic class for youngsters.
I don't know whether Jack Turk still sells this, but at one time he was selling Jon Jenson's course on teaching a magic class. I thought Jenson's stuff was great because a lot of the items he was pushing you could find at Walmart or by photocopying the materials he provided. If you're going to do this right, and hopefully do more teaching sessions at other camps, you really shouldn't be afraid to spend a litte money on seeing what others have done in this field. Gerry |

Tommy Johns offers a whole package on all the details of running a magic camp. All the details! Not just the tricks (although they are there too). I highly recommend it.

I just finished the last class of my week long magic camp. It was amazing. The kids were great and they learned so much.
In addition to what I mentioned in my first post, we covered "mr. Bagee," spirit writing (as a continuation of the paddle move), cold reading light (as part of the mind reading/fortune telling section), the kellar rope tie and Karell Fox's question mark card trick. On the last day (today) I gave out class notes. I had them printed in booklet form (18 half pages) and I covered everything we had done in class (theory, psychology and tricks) as well as an annotated recommended reading list. On the first day a lot of kids said they wanted to learn how to make their brother or sister disappear so I included a description of how to make a sibling disappear using black art as well as how to levitate someone. On thing that I think they appreciated was a focus on how could use the same principles (like a paddle move or a coin vanish) to do an almost unlimited number of different presentations and also to be able to magic with anything you can find.
