As a former police interrogator, I had knowledge about applied kinesiology, NLP and some cold reading techniques. To sharpen my skills, I just read the available information which always involves some kind of divination system. After I got the feel for what was going on I just used the techniques and left out the divination system and all is well.

I use cold reading all throughout my show. I use in when utilizing the Mental Epic and I do so without any gaff. I use it whem employing The Relic or just a simple pick a card routine.

Nolan Brade has a simple down to earth e-book and I usually recommend to people who are seriously interested.

Peace and Godspeed.

Same here. Police work has taught me a lot as well as great resources out there. I try to use CR consistantly during gigs and after as well for practice. Its all about hits and going with them and smoothing out the misses.

You got it G. After being a police officer in New Orleans almost 12 years, I do feel like my intuition, among other things, is more honed in than most people.

Unless I misunderstand, I think what magicFreak2 is asking for is examples of some standard/clssic mentalism effects (usually thought of as stage effects) other than one-on-one "readings" that can be enhanced by adding a bit of cold reading.

One such example would be a psychometry routine in which in a brief cold reading of the owner (puportedly based on the "vibes" received from each object) is given addition to identifying the person to which each of the objects belonged. Similary, in the presentation of Becker's "Sneak Thief" a brief reading of the artist of each drawing could be given before the drawing is returned to its artist. In those examples the brief reading is ancillary, but complementary, to what is essentially a demonstration of mentalism.

The effect people care about in psychometry is the reading, not the return of the item. You can pick up the item, do the reading, and ask whose it is. It may disappoint the magician in you but your audience will be happier as they want the reading. Less time futzing about returning things is more time for readings. Also divining the owner of an object is about what you can do...a reading is about them. These are different experiences...guess which one your audience would prefer?

I can not comment on Sneak Thief as I may be the only person in the world who does not know that effect.

You could just learn face reading...then you don't have to think about what lines to use. You just read the face of the person standing in front of you.

You could also learn basic palm reading. When the person is with you to do the effect just look at their hand and comment on what you see. You should be warned...once you do a palm reading your audience may not care to see your wonderful mentalism effects and would rather have their palms read.

Another thing you can do is learn basic playing card or tarot reading. Then with the person next to you just let three cards come in to your mind and do the reading based on those three cards.

As has been repeated often here it is faster and works better to just learn a system than to go around trying all these special lines, psychological tricks, and outs.

The "psychological trick" method is more work and gives less effective readings than just learning a system and doing it. I think most of those who have done readings for years would agree with me on this.

You are not the only one...I don't know the effect either.
Face reading is one of my modus operandi and has worked well for me.
