In the current issue of Magic Magazine, Stan Allen announces that they will go digital in the fall. Now that the magazine has started hitting mailboxes, I can release my cht with him on this topic: http://bit.ly/MNWMMSA What are your thoughts on digital versions of magic literature?

My opinion, stated there, is in part: "Interesting how my original query became morphed into a battle-ground over e-publications, copyrights, the relative merits of paper-based vs. electronic ink, etc… I am a user of both and can say without reservation that my (always growing) personal library at Lybrary.com is an integral part of my daily access to all things magic. With an iPad or other tablet device, I have the heretofore non-existent benefit of physically light, portable access to books, magazines, websites, videos, DVDs (according to most terms of use, you can burn up to 3 copies of a legitimately purchased DVD to your hard-drive), etc., etc. I currently have over 250 e-publications on my tablet. The equivalent space/weight/environmental requirements are self-evident to anyone with a robust library."

Dodd, as you know I am working in the digital domain in magic for more than a decade now. I have emailed Stan Allen more than once in the past years to suggest that he should offer a digital alternative. I even sent him entire pricing strategies and outlines of how to best transition to digital because I have consulted for several mainstream publishers to do exactly that. I don't know if he used any of this or if I was more a pain in the neck to him, but I am very happy that Magic is offering a digital alternative in September. It will also be interesting to see what he will do in detail - offer a PDF, or use an online hosting platform like zinio or issuu, or go with an iPad app like Wired and other magazines. But whatever he decides to do - it really doesn't matter that much and can be changed later as he learns and sees the response. The key is that he has the smarts to offer a digital alternative. And the keyword here is ALTERNATIVE. Anybody who prefers print can keep his print and be happy with it.
It will allow Magic to find new subscribers, it will make some of its current subscribers happier and we all will be a lot better off having more options to choose from. And the advertisers will very much appreciate it, too. I have tried running print ads in most major magazines but they never did anything. This has probably a lot to do with the fact that most of the products at Lybrary.com are digital. So I decided to not advertise in print a long time ago. But now that most magazines have a digital alternative it might again become interesting to advertise there, particularly if the digital version is consumed by a good portion of subscribers. I have said 10 years ago that the transition from print to digital will take about a generation - that is 30 years. We are now 10 years into my prediction. I think in 5-10 years we will have no daily printed newspapers anymore and in 20 years the majority of magazines and books will be sold in some digital form. It is inevitable and personally I think it will be a good thing. The major benefits are clear: searchability, hyperlinking, no physical limitations of weight etc. Yes, there will be some cons and some problems and we will have to change some of our habits, but overall everything taken together I think we will be much better off when everything is digital.
Lybrary.com preserving magic one book at a time.
