Wow hang on guys.
First off Gaddy you just did to me what you accuse Santa of doing to you. Second of all what is the nonsense of tellimg me cops are NOT questioned? Are you serious? It has gotten nothing but steadily WORSE for the guys on the job since OJ and you full well know it. EVERY action that they take which they have 1/2 of a second to make a decision is then poured over for years by those who have a "question authority" approach. Don't tell me those guys are not looked at because it is either ignorant or a lie plain and simple. These people MUST be there! They are the ones you complain are not there when your house is broken into or someone you know is killed. People bemoan them not being arround when THEY need them! How pathetic. "Private security" I will never speak of as I have never been involved in the practice. But when you start with this nonsense about cops, well it is sad to watch.

No wonder the protesters are so wild in Canada, they seem to be pretty anti authority and police in general there.

Why do I have Ballad of a Thin Man running through my head . . .
Oh I wish I could be as pithy as Tommy has been throughout this thread.

I hate when people judge police actions on a video shot from an onlooker that is only showing one side of the altercation.
1. Why was the person being arrested? 2. Do you know, I mean really know, the laws of the state, provence or country? 3. Do you know police procedure especially regarding the Force Continuum? Peace and Godspeed.
Peace

Live blog (major local newspaper) from the G20 protests:
http://thestar.blogs.com/g20/ Excerpt: 9 p.m. Queen St. W. and Spadina Ave. A detainee in his early 20s said he was simply crossing the intersection of Queen St. W. and Spadina Ave. to see some friends when he was detained by riot police. The young man, who said he's on a month-long vacation in Canada from Ireland, said he wasn't protesting or demonstrating. "Wrong place, wrong time," he said with a thick Irish accent as he stood handcuffed and shivering in the pouring rain, waiting to be processed by police. "Great vacation."

What is that mi amigo Jon?
Over 600 completely innocent people arrested by those jack booted thugs, aka The Filth. |

From that video something happened, the police all charged at the same time, so a central order had to be given. I would imagine that at some point a command to disperse had been given which is probably why those people sat down.
In the U.S., disobeying a command by a police officer is considered resisting thus prompting use of force. Peace and Godspeed.

Whatever they are protesting - they're not protesting very effectively. I am a news addict - read the paper every day, check various news websites and watch the evening news if not some of the news channel - and I've not once seen a reference to what they are protesting - I in fact don't have a clue what they are protesting - and whatever it is I tend to lose interest in a cause once I see this behaviour.
I'm too lazy to look up exactly who makes up the G20 but the leaders I've seen are from properly functioning democracies - voting at home would probably be a more effective way of changing policy than burning Canadian police cars. |

Obviously they are there, protesting the Agent Provocateurs who are causing this violence.

The most effective protest I ever saw was the hippies putting flowers in the rifles of the National Guardsmen during the Vietnam War - an image which perfectly illustrated the message they were trying to get across.

Protests have changed the world, now they have become big business. I can not imagine a more sad transformation.

The decision to box people into the Queen St. and Spadina Ave. intersection Sunday evening was made after police saw protesters believed to be part of the so-called Black Bloc, police said. “We're not suggesting we’re perfect,” Toronto Police Staff Superintendent Jeff McGuire said after most of the crowd was released unconditionally around 9:40 p.m. “That was the decision we made at that time. Sometimes, it doesn’t work out perfectly.”

Jon, I've been following wikileaks for a long time now. Have you read any of Glenn Greenwald's stuff on the Manning/Lamo/WIRED affair? It deserves a thread of its own, though perhaps not on the Café.
