Hi All,
What are your thoughts about this routine? Is it, in your opinion, as innovative as some of the posted testimonials claim? ("Denny, you have the best cups routine in magic. You have gotten rid of the awful false placements, the wand, sliding balls under cups, etc...You are light years ahead of what everybody else is doing. I thought so when I saw you do it 30 years ago: still think so today. My four favorite cups routines are yours, the Johnny Paul, Tommy Wonder, and Fred Kaps. But you win. Your angles are better, and you cover the balls with the cups. (Gee what a brilliant concept) Your routine should replace Vernon 's as the standard!" - Bill Nagler M.D., March 2005) http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/cups-and-b......142.html

This is a wonderful routine... it's the only routine I do with cups. Oh yeah, I do something with a tiny chop cup.
Bill Nagler was pretty enthusiastic, but then he's been a friend of mine for over 30 years. Hank Moorehouse is another good friend and said this about the routine: "I first saw this routine more than 30 years ago. I've still not seen a better one." What we don't tell you is that I pay Hank to close his eyes whenever a magician starts to perform a cups routine in his presence. Seriously, there is a drawback to the routine as explained in my book: it's designed to be done seated. I confess that for that reason I tend to do my Micro Chop Cup more since much of my close up work is strolling. I have reworked my cups routine so that it can be done from the pockets, but frankly three full sized cups and the final load balls are a lot to carry in the pockets today. Years ago, men's pants were much fuller and you could get more stuff in your pockets. The routine does work well as a parlor routine where you use a table with a servante in the back instead of the saddle bags I use when seated. The only person I've ever seen do this routine is me.
I bought the routine from Mr. Loomis as part of my search for a routine to do myself. I worked up the entire routine and have it on tape. Since it is NOT my routine I'd never put the video out or about. Mr. Loomis undoubtedly does it better than anyone else. It is everything you've read about or heard. Mr. Loomis has a very, very performable routine. Portions of it, when done correctly will return a sense of wonder to even the most jaded magician. His routine was a real eye-opener for me and although I don't think I use anything directly from his routine, it did make me see there were many, many paths up the mountain. For fifteen clams . . . you're simply not going to find another routine as innovative or outside the pastiche most folks make of the Vernon routine. You can buy it here, from the author. http://loomismagic.com/item21155.htm That's where I'd get a copy. He also has great prices on cups and balls stuff. It's sort of a one-stop shop! KG PS. I swear Mr. Loomis had not yet posted when I was typing this up. Everything I said still goes though, darn it and I don't know Dennis Loomis at all! I just know his routine is one of magic's hidden treasures. Now send the guy fifteen bucks! |

To Kentfgunn,
Thanks so much for the plug. I appreciate it. To Pete, Well, yes I was a close friend of Doug's. As such, I'm mentioned fairly often in the book. But, those that haven't read the Harrison book about Henning should read it to discover what an amazing talent Doug was. Doug was very bright and really was the main person behind all of his magic. He had some helpers, sure, but Doug made ALL of the final decisions about this routines and his career. We've got it for a good price at Loomis Magic, but no matter where you get it... get it. Someone just emailed and asked why Bill Nagler makes something out of the fact that in my Routine, I place the cups over the balls.
I'll try to briefly share this concept. Imagine that a lay person has two objects on the table in front of him. A mouth down cup, and a ball. And, imagine that for some reason he wants to get the ball under the cup. I think most people would only touch one object... the cup. They would lift it up with one hand and place it over the ball. It's less likely... and hence unnatural... to pick up the ball with one hand, lift or tip back the cup with the other, put the ball under the cup, and then replace the cup. Too much wasted effort, and therefore a little suspicious. Even worse, in my opinion is to pick up the ball visibly in one hand, then place it into the other hand, where it is unseen, tip the cup back with the hand that initially picked up the ball, place the actually non-existent ball under the cup, and then replace the cup. And yet, many cups and balls workers do these two actions over and over when they are performing the cups. I don't. Dennis Loomis

I've seen some people doing this routine but none of them juggle or do the bits with the flask (that I've heard about - I don't own the routine). Are those just frosting on the cake- or do most of you who do the routine do more after making the 2 larger load balls appear? Thanks

To clarify, the routine that Magic1 is talking about is the Loomis Micro Chop Cup routine, not the cups & balls routine. I use the chop cup routine and end with the production of the 2 larger loads. I can juggle, but don't here & I don't owe a hip flask.

Doug Henning was the guy who truly got magic to transcend the television screen for me as a kid. Anyone who knew him well has to have good stuff by proxy alone

I love that routine and used to do it before developing my own.
