"When TLA flops with its $150 million budget and $130 marketing costs, you’re going to have to find yet another studio to take a chance on you. You’re running out of places to run to. Your fans hoped that because this was the first film whose story you didn’t invent that you could turn around your fortunes. But there’s just one problem, you see: You still wrote and directed it. This may be the last time any studio gives you the power to cast anyone except maybe in your daughter’s school play." "Why am I being so vitriolic? Because those who care about balancing the laughable image Asian Americans have in motion pictures prayed for someone from our own community to develop enough power to create films that could make up for decades and decades of hostile treatment—to make us heroes that audiences of all backgrounds would cheer for. You were one of the few who could do that." "Instead, you invented new excuses that white directors never thought of, leaving us off the page and off the screen—even for a project that was originally written specifically for us." "You blew it big time. For all of us."

This is just sad.
Just have to remind myself that in the end it's just a Cartoon. Probably will still see it. Probably.

He's a white kid because M. Night Shyamalan decided to cast a white kid. It's about that simple.

Who cares.
God, some people need to get over themselves long enough to realize its a movie. Its not going to redefine the Asian community or the world. And if it did, that's what would be sad. Sad is a bunch of people who have so little self respect that they have to count on a movie to boost them up. But, Heres another one. Why are they speaking English at all? White kid? Now I'm going to see it twice.

I have checked into this outrage and to discover WHY this kid is white, or as the politically correct say 'honkified'. My investigation has lead me to the conclusion that the root cause of his being white is his parents who are, surprise, white as well. Sickening I know. I'm starting to suspect there may be a long line of white in this kids family, who knows.

I can forgive re-interpreting race despite the heavily-Asian influenced world, as oddly as it came out. My problem is that not only was the acting horrible, and the dialogue completely nonsensical and out of place, but even NAMES WERE PRONOUNCED INCORRECTLY. I mean c'mon Mr. Shymalan, you had the whole series right in front of you! You had the humor, the dialogue, the sequences, how things should at least be CLOSE to being. And NONE of that transferred over. It's like the only thing he took was the magic bending. That was it. And the idea of Aang. Everything else, he tore apart. Even as a standalone movie, it was horrible. I have seen movies that were good despite taking generous liberties from the alternative sources they were derived from. This is not one of them.

I wonder how many Caucasians get cast in leading roles by film production companies in Asia.

I've never watched the original animated series, but I looked it up on IMDB this evening just out of curiousity.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417299/ The main voice actors in the animated series are: Zach Tyler ... Aang / ... Mae Whitman ... Katara / ... Jack De Sena ... Sokka / ... Dee Bradley Baker ... Appa / ... De Sena is a Filipino, but the others are non-Asian so far as I can tell from their IMDB profiles.

So basically are you saying that the people who made this movie are rampant racist out to get the Asians? If not then what is your point? I heard an interview with Wesley Snipes that the lead role in Passenger 57 was suppose to be a white guy, was it anti caucasian (I'm soooo PC) that they hired Snipes?
Now you ask who is caucasian in Asian movies. Aha! Since my main dude Obama is black based on his father then we can use that as the base for race. Maggie Q, the cutie pie, is very popular in Asian films and she is caucasian. There are a number of performers in Asia that have a caucasian parent and thus, using the Obama factor, be honkies. Rashida Jones, who I have a major crush on and I think is so pretty it is sickening, is the daughter of Quincy Jones but she has always played white roles while her sister plays black roles. So she is as black in race as Obama is yet she is taking roles from white actresses which is reverse racism but that is good because she is so darn cute she should be on every tv show. What about Miriah Carey? Black woman in white roles. What about that racist Lou Dimond Phillips stealing all those hispanic roles! While at it what is with gay actors playing straight roles? What nonsense! Or worse, straight actors playing gay roles, Homophobic! There are, in my never to be humble opinion, many roles that are race neutral and they pick who they pick to play the part. If there was a role where race was a factor needed to carry the story then fine get someone who can play that role. Heck, I saw a photo when I looked up that movie and the kid looks like a space alien to me and not of any recognized race. What a bunch of nonsense.... (Rashida, if you do a search and find this post I love you) |

It all started when the early Hollywood fraudsters scammed an unsuspecting public with drag queen collies masquerading as Lassie.
Since then it's been a never ending stream of deception. I have read that some of the streets they use in films are not real streets but just something called a 'set'. I'm surprised the whole phoney artiface did not come tumbling down when producers tried to claim Keanu Reeves was an actor and Gwenyth Paltrow, a great beauty. |
