I have the large Rabbid (http://www.whenyouwishmagic.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=97&products_id=2701&zenid=b57413c25a0fde922cdf058cffb70465). He does fold up to fit into my dove pan.
I want to lift the lid, show him for a moment, then grab him. At this point, I'll stick my finger in a hole in his mouth and act like he's eating me - it'll give me a chance to put the lid down and lift him out of the pan. The problem is how to get him to completely open up when I lift the lid. I haven't tried anything yet, but here's my brainstorms: -- Weights in the bottom and threads through the head to the pan lid -- A giant sponge ball in the head and a lightweight large diameter spring in the body -- Small air cylinder with a balloon (part of a 350 or 646) with a release valve Any thoughts or ideas? Hole in the bottom of the pan(s) to push him up with your hand.

Thanks for the thought, but it wouldn't work in this case. The dove pan is being held by someone. For the routine, the pan (which has double load innards) is brought out with the first load (the Rabbid) ready, but the lid is not set on completely.
The volunteer holds the pan, I lift the lid, and he removes what's inside so we can use it in the routine. Then I set the lid on, and we progress with the routine. At the proper moment, I lift the lid and .... it's a Rabbid! In interacting with the Rabbid, I'll secure the second load and finally end the trick. So that means anything has to be contained totally in the Rabbid, pan, and lid before I start, and must be reasonably transparent to the volunteer. Ed |

I don't have a Rabbid so I don't know the construction of it. Is it possible to insert a metal appearing cane inside of it to make it pop up?

The Rabbis is 17" high, completely hollow, latex rubber. It can be compressed fairly flat or into a ball about the size of two fists. It does eventually return to shape, but not instantly.
You can put anything inside. I have a curtain rod cover wand - it might unroll more predictably in a shorter length that it does at 5 foot. I'm not familiar with the appearing cane, so I don't know if it expands like the rod cover or from the end like a "Chinese yo yo". But I also don't know the mechanism the pops it out. Ed |

How about using the spring from a spring snake. Just remove the cloth covering and cut the spring to the length you need.

Haven't had a chance to do it yet - won't get a free day to "play" for maybe another week. But there's no reason it shouldn't with some experimentation. I had thought of springs, but couldnd't think of where to buy one that diameter and easily compressable. Now I know where to go and what to get.
