Meeeee!!!! I fly to my favorite lake, sit on a boat, cast a line out, and sit there but I call it fly-fishing:-) First fly, then fish:-)
Okay, not really. A a serious note though- I just googled fly-fishing and it said that artifical flies are used as the bait. Are the standard worms ever used when fly-fishing? Just curious.... All the Best, Andrew |

I was through my teen years into my early 20s. In the foothills west of Calgary, I spent a huge portion of my youth seeking trout and mountain whitefish. Good times.
Sadly, I moved away from the mountain streams and really have fished very little in the last 25 years. Tell us, where do you fish and what are you after? John

Well I've been an angler here in Ontario since I was a little kid. I've fished all ov er southern and central Ontario for bass, pike, muskie and walleye. However, I've just recently taken up fly-fishing. I'm getting quite good at casting and have started tying my own flies. I've caught a few different species on a wet fly so far but I'm still looking for my first trout.(On a fly that is)

I've played with it and even started tying my own flies several years ago! I actually spent the time watching what the fish would hit and tried to duplicate it and I've even caught a few on my own creations!
There is a certain elegance about fly fishing that appealed to me at one time but now I pretty much fish in the market or sea food restaurants! MMc |

I tie flies and live in a fly fishing area but what little I've done couldn't be called really fly fishing because I've no clue what I'm doing.

There are two types of fly lines, floating and sinking. Wet flies sink, for example wooly worms and wooly buggers. I would think you could deliver worms where you want them with a sinking line and let them move along the bottom into a pool. The trout hang out waiting for food off of the faster moving water, same with steelhead. I may not be much with a fly rod but I fished a lot for trout.

The gear waits by the door but doesn't see much action lately.
I would need 2 days off in order to get to a good spot. That's not gonna happen.

Come on over! I'm 10 minutes from a lake with big browns, 15 from a river, and an hour from Sierra Nevada mountain streams...and a big river about 25 minutes away in the other direction...and I've not been fishing in four years.

Story about my lake. They have a fish called a Wiper which is a hybrid between a Striper and a white bass, this is a big fish. Our lake has four state records for different fish, it called lake Lahontan.
http://www.landbigfish.com/staterecords/......e=Nevada I was talking to the guy who has the wiper record at the hardware store where he works and he said he broke the record three times and each time his wife was spending the day fishing with him and those were the only times she ever went. I commented "Dang, I'm surprised you don't take her all the time" and he said "I'd rather have peace and quiet than a big fish" |

Magicfish-
Yes, I am an avid fly fisherman! I could never get into "normal" fishing, but fell in love with the grace and rhythm of fly fishing. I think it has a magic all its own! Jim

No problem, most wouldn't be aware of it...I am a guiding light if the light is useless info.

I've started out with a 9' St. Croix 6 weight rod matched with a G.Loomis Venture 5 reel. It seems to be a good multi-species combo. I caught a smallmouth bass from a river the other day- what a thrill. Every fish feels like a monster on the fly rod. Rod |

We had a guy in Silicon Valley, director of logistics at a big tech company, who loved ocean fly fishing so much he quit and moved to the Keys! I actually only caught one fish fly fishing, about a six inch rainbow trout.

I love St. Croix rods, and yes a 6 weight is very versatile. Use to fly fish the keys, but slinging a 9 weight into a stiff gulf wind is more work than play. I also enjoy going to the other end of the spectrum, and if you want "every fish feels like a monster" you need to try the Orvis 1 weight! I only use it at a club that is "no release" as you just have to play the fish too long to put it back with that light of tackle...
