That certainly is rough. I had no idea bout RS or the Digest. Blockbuster I feared for namely because it's too easy to access movies via pay-per-view or the like. Also rough for Kia and T-Mobile, though I've never used either service.

It's so sad when out brave, patriotic, corporate logos and brand names are reduced to such ignoble ends...

It doesn't say all of them are going under but changing with the times. Readers Digest is changing from a monthly to ten issues a year. I agree with Radio Shack. They have marketed themselves into the position of 'cheap electronics' which means inferior to a lot of people and rebranding maked a lot of sense. They have to do it to save the store and change the image.

Warwick Shoppers World (oh wait, you had to be a Rhode Islander to miss that one!) I remember a Doonesbury that dealt with a returning Viet Nam POW who discovered in his absence Life magazine had ceased publication. After ranting that all he'd dreamed about was getting home and reading his Life magazine again, he finally decides that it's all for the best anyway; "It's seven o'clock, time for Ed Sullivan!"

Here's the list the same site did for 2010. I note that Blockbuster is on both lists.
I'd say that this is more of a list of companies with poor prospects at the time of publication. For example, Borders is on the 2010 list, yet they just released an eBook reader. |

On 2010-07-09 13:48, I could be mistaken but I think the Broadway is still in operation in the Boulevard Mall In Las Vegas Nevada. Granted it's been like six years since I have visited that mall but last I knew Broadway was still there. |

I don't know if it is the same store, if it is a store, but a mall in Reno has a place called The Broadway.

Not surprised to hear Blockbuster is going under. I haven't rented a movie there in about ten years. I didn't even realize people were still going there to get "New Releases" and then tolerate all those late fees, rewinding fees, etc.. So much easier to download a movie from iTunes or go to Red Box or Pay-Per-View on your cable TV service.
I remember when Blockbuster rented VCRs as well as tapes back in the 1980s! |

Since Blockbuster is into DVDs now, I doubt there's still a "rewinding fee."
My kid said he wanted to get one of their old "Be Kind - Rewind" stickers and put it on a DVD just to see if anyone got confused. (I also remember a joke site that had a picture of a CD-Rom spindle with a label on it that read; "DVD Rewinder."

It's all a lesson of changing with the times and keeping up with your competition.
I worked for one of the early VHS Rental businesses in the Eighties. You needed a credit card on file and a membership that ran $50 a year or $100 lifetime to rent the movies. Movie rentals were $9.99 per day and VHS Player rentals were $25.00 per day - and business was GOOD! Blockbuster came along with a new business model and drove these early video rental stores out of business. Then, Blockbuster abused their dominance with a long list of ridiculous fees and poor customer service. They blew Netflicks off at first then tried to catch up with their Movies-by-Mail service with a ridiculous fee structure. Now I can rent DVD's 24/7 for a buck a night at the Redbox in my supermarket down the street. Why would I drive to a Blockbuster? They totally lost sight of their competition and customer base and are paying the price. Ces't le vie! As for Movies-on-Demand? Time Warner charges $3.99 for a 24 hour movie rental then tacks on an extra $3.50 in "fees, taxes and charges." Ridiculous! I guess most people don't check their bills before paying. Another abusive dinosaur looking to be brought down.

All three of those companies have outlived their usefullness. 20 years ago I retired a useless wife, and traded up for a woman with lower mileage.
I am not recommending divorce as a solution to an unhappy marrage they are very expensive, but in my case it was worth every penny

Companies come and go. Not many people make buggie whips any more. Life goes on. It is called ¨creative destruction¨.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_destruction Pretty easy to understand really. Even wiki comes pretty close! Incidently it was Netflix that crushed Blockbuster. No doubt.

Still room for the nitch marketer. I make a trip to Black Lodge video several times a year. Localy owed, has DVD's blockbuster never heard of, and best of all, keeps them forever.
