In your opinion, what is the most "shocking" spongeball routine...maybe even one that fooled you? If possible, do you have a link to a video where it is being performed?

I guess one would have to define "Shocking"?

I haven't seen a video of it, but Tom Stone's Benson Bowl routine as described in his book Vortex has me shocked and amazed just reading about it.

I second the Tom Stone Benson Bowl routine.
It forms a shocking mental picture.

Way back in the 1960's someone came out with the 1st 5" sponge ball made of close cell foam. They were a little oblong or not perfect circles. They sold only 2 balls.
I went into the local magic shop and as usual the dealer showed his latest inventory. He placed a sponge ball in his hand and one in mine. His vanished and when I opened my hand their was 2 balls. Blew me away! He got my 2 dollars and I went around showing it to everyone in school and could meet in my everyday life. It was fantastic. This very short trick was fantastic. Many years later Albert Goshman came out with his wonderful product in a set of 4 and an expanded routine. The sponge ball effect is the most magical effect any magician can perform. They are not easy to carry around, but the effort is worth it. No card trick or coin trick can compare to this miracle! |

The expanding sponge ball from The Sponge Book blew me completely away the first time I saw it.

This is what properly designed routines do rather than bringing a very great trick down to its bones.

The most shocking one I have done was before magicians when they discovered I was using solid balls. i.e. I mimicked standard Sponge Ball effects using other sleights and moves -- some that only worked because they thought I was using sponge balls and were anticipating the wrong thing.

The most shocking sponge ball routine I have envisioned involves a device I obtained from Louis Berkie's magic shop in San Antonio when I was in middle school. It was an actual electric joy buzzer. It used one AA battery and had a vibrating trigger inside it. It was about as powerful as an electric ball point pen.
I just can't figure out how to get that thing inside a big sponge ball.

Shocking sponge bunnies! At least they were to the haggared airline ticket clerk.
I did a quick routine for her and when she opened her hand and let out a tremendous scream I had a brief sense of delight... until security showed up! They don't like screaming in the airport apparently... Lynn |

I can't say I've ever seen a spongeball routine that I would describe as shocking.
