Good to see you posting regularly Satellite!!
Oh how I WISH the censors would let this pass, but, here goes with the asterisks and all This may not be the strongest, but it IS one of the funniest. I was working a bar called The Big Easy. It is a very nice place, and the clientele is usually quite reserved. I always received strong reactions, but on this particular night I was working at a table where a four university English professors sat. I did Kennedy's ingenious card to box. I play this one up all through the set. They are watching a heavily rubber banded box while I am performing. Sooooo... I finally close the table with that effect. Three of the professors reacted with a wonderful WOW. The fourth, a rather distinguished woman stood up, backed away from the table, and literally SCREAMED... "But he didn't even touch the ******g box!! Holy **** how the **** did he DO that???!!" mmmmmmmmm I SO love that. There is another strong reaction, but there is NO way I can post it here Ahimsa, Vlad |

My very best reaction to a trick was to jump to my feet hollering: "No f-ing way! NO F-ING WAY!!! Oh my God I can't believe it! I... I... I..." Then I spontaneously began sobbing and ran out or the room.
What's really funny is that I actually owned my own set of Hippy-Hoppy Rabbits, but the presentation had disguised it so well that the climax dramatically challenged my understanding of known physics and the standard color wheel. Oh, wait... did you mean my best reaction, or the best reaction I've ever received for performing a trick? Um... never mind. TW

After performing "Up the Ante," there was a thermonuclear blast of expletives that raised the level of scatological profanity to that of spontaneous, group poetry.
The couple I chose to be the hands-on participants were more delicate folks - they kept repeating, "That is impossible. Impossible. That is just not possible..." One of my Up the Ante presentations ended with a married couple and many spectators in tears; the tears that well up in one's eyes similar to being affected by a moment of emotional catharsis in a film.
"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

Awesome! It is even better than hearing an audience enthusiastically appreciating your magic when it comes from a fellow magician.....Thankyou, Panlives!

I teach English here and almost all of my students think I only understand English, not our main language. I always told them that I'm from other countries (Australia, Singapore, Philippines, or China). Occasionally, I perform for them just to break the ice or kill the boredom.
So I did Crime from Ultragaff, did a very quick switch while they were busy talking about it. Then did a routine of Search & Destroy by Aaron Fisher under their nose. One of them was really excited but also upset as he wanted to know the working. He was screaming and talking in our language and started to swear. Long story short, he was saying some vulgar swearing words and said "If only I could swear in English here!" I tried so hard not to burst into laughter. But it was a good moment. They still talk about it sometimes when I went into their class. I did Power of Poker for a co-worker (he's a New Yorker), and for the next two minutes he could only said: "WTF" couple of times

Be prepared for loud reactions, since they could startle you too...I was performing haunted matchbook for my neice, and when the drawer opened, she screamed, and I almost dropped the matchbook...

My favorite reaction I ever got was from Daryl's Untouched. When the card on top of the second pile was turned over a guy that was watching (not even the spectator) said "F@@K" and walked away really fast. I think he was freaked out!

I understand this is a card forum but the title of the thread "What was your best reaction to a trick? This conjures up an old memory back when I was into parlor magic.
I had visited Paul Diamond's magic shop in the early '70s and walked out with a Zombie ball & Foulard. I practiced this effect endlessly and had the routine down pretty well in a month or so. I lived near A1A in Ft. Lauderdale and was an art student at the Art Institute of Ft Lauderdale. I had 2 (both were art students too) roomies and we had a party that Halloween ('71). We had some fellow students and their acqauintances over and the topic turned to me being a magician and everyone asked me to do some magic. So,I broke out the Zombie and began to patter about the ball having the "spirit of a deceased person" a Zombie's Soul so to speak encased within it. Our apartment was lit up with blacklites and dayglo posters and art so the mood was eerie to begin with...ooohhh scary! Well, to make a long story short, I began to "float" the Zombie ball around the room. A chick who was under the influence of some illicit mind altering substance began to scream and she ran out of the apartment in horror! Everyone yelled to put that thing away...I guess I had realistically practised the effect too much! That is the most memorable reaction to anything I have ever done in magic! Sad but true...The girl was finally subdued a block away and reassured that it was only a trick. It's the only time I had to show a secret BTW as I showed her how the effect was accomplished... I only do cards now...never have had a reaction like that w/ cards though! Cardamagically. Dom

I once had a spectator literally start hyperventilating after an ambitious card sequence where the card is sticking out of your mouth.
They had to take her out of the establishment for a good 10 mins. to get her some fresh air and calmed down. Now that's pretty powerful, BUT not really a good thing overall.... Cheers. |

Was running DD's "Too Many Cards" and when I got to the final disclosure I took a full on spit take.

I used to have a roof top patio. I did a trick there for 4 people people where each picked a card and held them face down. When I counted to 3 I instructed them to turn their card over and it's revealed that all the cards chosen were the aces. One of the guys just turned around and started walking. I was seriously worried that he was going to walk right off the roof (as it was night and dark). I ran up to him and put my hand on his shoulder just to make sure he was ok.

People often scream when they pull the egg out of the egg bag.
A woman actually punched me in the arm and ran back to her seat, when I revealed her thought when performing "Mental Yarn". I was demoing the cups and balls at a local magic shop when I pushed the ball through the top of the cup with my finger. A young woman who was watching screamed, "No ****ing way!" I get these reactions quite often often, but those were the ones that came to mind. |
