The main thing you need to look professional, in my opinion, assuming that you actually are dressed for the occasion, is innate knowledge of what you are going to do next.

Thanks, Bill. I'll go eat my humble pie in peace now...
Also, as to being dressed for the occasion... Well, I've been going out busking in my suit, then tried a nice shirt and pants w/vest, and finally shorts and a t-shirt (And the vest. It's slimming. I need that.) My biggest successes have all been in casual gear. I think it may have to do with me looking more natural in it, and being more comfortable with it, which definitely translates to the audience. I will have to further test this hypothesis. Unfortunately, I'm a little shy to try a thong in San Francisco. -Augie |

The main thing so you can look professional (besides all the previoulsy great suggestions mentioned)- PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE so your confidence exhumes and your presentation/patter can be excellent!

Looking professional begins before and after the show. Here's my list;
1) Contract 2) Dress - fitted suit, haircut, clean hands 3) Punctuality 4) Introductions - Host, Partygoers 5) Flawless Routine - i.e. good entertainment value,logical flow, patter 6) Memorable exit 7) Follow-up Thank-You It's of my opinion, if you have these guidelines in place, you will significantly increase your chances of your clients viewing you as professional. |

Be personable and perform with sincerity and confidence. You can't lose, and they can't help but ask for more.

The supermodel on your shoulder thing isn't bad either.

Just do great magic. I have a number of friends who are there sometimes when I perform. They tell everyone how great I am. I always thought I was good, but not great.
We all must remember that what we do is very special to those who haven't seen it before. Know what you do well. Be dressed professionally. Have great, rehearsed patter. Rock! Sammy

A few I haven't seen yet -
- send a written confirmation of show details before the gig - Show up on time - mail a personalized thank you note after the gig. - roll with the punches when their schedule doesn't go according to plan - don't complain when the dinner goes to long or some other activity does not run on time. - always do a special performance for the host (if they have time and it's appropriate) - my favorite: have fun -:) Chances are, if you're having fun your audience is too.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Looking professional.
Listening to the customer. Knowing what the customer wants and needs. Making the customer feel important. Delivering what the customer wants and needs. and, finally, being kind. |
