Hi All,
I have been doing a sponge ball routine for years. I use goshman two inch standard red balls. Just like them best. I have his sponge "4" and end my routine with a two in the hand one in the pocket segment ending with the sponge "4" as a climax. Over time the all the sponge balls and sponge 4 will grow darker in color and tend to match very well. However, I have had to replace the sponge balls a few times over the years and now can't find the same type of ball and color I once used. I found Red Goshman standard balls, but they are not the same. So the balls and sponge 4 no longer match perfectly in color. Both are red but the balls are a bit brighter. I have used them for months, they don't seem to get darker over time. My question is, do you think this matters at all? I used to flash the sponge four, while in my fist to show a small piece of red sponge when asking how many inside. Now, I still can but the flashed piece is darker than the the balls. Or I could just not show any part of the sponge four and reveal it as the climax/kicker of the routine. Perhaps the different color/shade enhances things? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. In my opinion, the color doesn't really matter that much. I think this is one of those times when we as magicians should really just relax and not sweat the small stuff.
The reveal of the 4 should be shocking enough that people won't care about the color. Flashing the color difference might even enhance the effect. It will make there curiosity run wild. The simple fact that the balls changed into something totally different is the true magic. You could pull out a dirty sock and they would be surprised!(not recommended...well, I might give it a try)LOL

I just had one of the greatest sponge ball experiences ever!
Last Friday I showed three kids a quick sponge routine. I live in Fargo, North Dakota, and it is one of the biggest relocations for New Americans. Anyway, the three kids were from somewhere in Africa, and spoke very little english. They had caught the end(cups & balls) of my 20 min. show. So as I was putting away my stuff they came over and asked if I could do the trick(cups & balls)for them again. They kept asking me if the balls really didn't fit inside the cups! So instead of showing them the cups & balls, I whipped out some of the sponge balls. I handed the boys some magic wands and told them if they say "Alakazam" that the balls would do some tricks. Their eyes lit up when they started seeing the balls jump from my hand into thiers. I even made some come out of their shoes. They could not believe it!!! The little dudes then told me that they had never seen magic. NONE! One of them even thought that the wand was where the magic was coming from. He started waving it over everything saying "ALAKAZAM,ALAKAZAM"!!! I am really glad my wife got this on video, because it made me remember the sheer wonder of what magic can have on people. Moral of the story: Just show off your magic, and don't worry to much about the small details!
All you have to do to change your life, is to change your daily habits!

A minor mismatch in color may not matter much, especially if a little time is involved to mess with the spectator's recall. But, if you can't get over the difference in color, that can make a difference. What really matters is the audience reaction. If they notice, get a new set.

My routine, color was so critical that I took the item off of the market. I recently paid a premium for Goshman to do a dye lot match on all of the sponges in this effect. Only then did I re-release it.
Color is critical when the effect is slow and balls are side by side. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWjwoAB9DA8

Again, thanks for the replies.
I have solved my problem. I got some fabric dye and dyed the balls all a nice red, that with the sponge 4, they are all now the perfect color. thanks, |

I looked down and (I was wearing light colored socks.) and the socks were red. I turned my pocket inside out and it was red and so was my pant waist lining and tighty whities were red. Sooo, I had a batch of 200 sponges which had never dried (they needed rinsing), but no matter how long I rinsed, the red bled.). 5 years later, after storing them, they still bled red.

Well,
So far so good. I have used the dyed balls for two weeks and they are not bleeding at all. But I will be on the look out for that. by the way, how would your socks get red from sponge balls? thanks, David |

Later on, I used to give the "tainted sponges" to certain pain in the butt, know it all magicians. I will tell you, even years later, I ran the balls in a sink and the sink water was red. Pete White is noted for his silks and tie dying colors. Silk does not retain excess color, but the sponge was another story.

I have no idea what this sentence means. I don't think it would even help if I knew what word he meant instead of "emoe." |

White did not understand enough about the nature of dye and the syn. sponge Ian.
Dyes for silks hold great and bond down to a molecule but for sponge, keeping that rich color after rinsing is hard for most colors. Funny story though. |

There are ways to "set" the dye.

Sure Bill but have you tried? Synthetic materials are not the easiest to hold color. I have tired the setting solutions on Goshman balls and they only will wash out what really is not sticking thus making it look faded.
The reason they transfer is the excess dye that when wet, just stick to the other colors. |
